....... cheap and cheerful. You use them on your tongue, like you would if you were whistling with your fingers. I don't like the taste of the metal ones and they stick to your lips if it's very frosty.

Get one and practice (y)

Bosun's whistle? For gundogs, I was a bit fussy. Need a whistle that I could 'talk' to the dog with. Found a plastic one made by Hudson's, it was very cheap and made of plastic, and absolutely perfect. I think about 20p each 40 years ago. Then they stopped making them. I wrote to the company and had an interesting correspondence with them. They had scrapped the machine but sent me a prototype with the warning that it would shatter if dropped. That was a great whistle -- until it broke! I'm another who can't get on with a shepherd's whistle!

They take some getting used to but once you do it’s easy

I got one of them Logan ones, can get some notes to recall the dogs, but I have never been able to change the pitches consistently.
Good job I only had to catch stray sheep that got out the paddocks and not doing it for a living or id be fooked

I use a cheap Logan one, but I did actually prefer my old plastic one which was sadly lost
Plastic was easier for consistency and much better on a cold day, specially if the whistle drops down inside your jumper instead out hanging outside it! Brrrrrr

I struggled for ages with those, eventually getting semi-reasonable but have bought one of these since
Whistle x6 small.jpg

which are slightly larger and squarer and I get on loads better with it.

And it's not just practice - I still struggle with the original one if I misplace the main one.

Both styles available from the ISDS website amongst other places.

My Dad taught me how to whistle louder than those things you put in your mouth when I was 10.

Teeth and tongue. Easy once you've got the hang of it, and no nagging worries about germs.

I use the metal ones, same shape as the old fortune ones, my dad knew that old guy dick forgune, the metal ones aren't cheap but will not break and last forever. Look up logan whistles on Google.
