Yay, certificate turned up on Saturday, after a visit from plod ten days ago. I only applied at the beginning of December. I’m already on their system, having held a shotgun certificate for 35 years, so presumably little more than a formality.

Not the local firearms officer at fault imo, just the system.

Emailed my renewal form off with doctors letter at the beginning of April and haven’t heard anything since and my certificate expires end of next week. Should I be concerned?

Probably worth contacting them and asking for a temporary extension before it expires?

Still can’t get over the difference in forces, I submitted a variety on the second of May and they called me yesterday to sort it out so just over 3 weeks.

Personally I think a lot of it comes down to whether the department is made up of retired police officers or not.

Certainly I've found that things round here have gone downhill a lot in the past 10-15 years since most of the original team have been replaced by retired coppers. It's almost as if they are intentionally on a go-slow protest.

Copy extract of the info from their "auto-reply" received back from any communication with them.

"Grant applications are being accepted but due to the demand you must allow up to 12 months for completion."
"
Please be advised that we are currently working with reduced staffing levels and therefore we ask that you refrain from contacting the office landline or the call centres chasing applications as this will only increase demands on us at this challenging time."

Where as ever time I’ve called the department it’s been answered straight away and usually by the same guy who’s been really helpful. Like I say the difference in forces is astounding!

Humberside refused to give dad a temp extension we hand delivered the forms and had a receipt but said it wasn’t at the firearms dept as that took an extra week to go internally. Said put them in the gun shop until sorted and it would take whatever time it took to renew. It was the first time the doctors was needed for renewal and In the end it was only for a week or so over time but still a pain as I don’t have a license any more.

That doesn’t bode well then, mines due next January with them, last time went great and no mention of a Doctors note when many other forces were insisting on it

I think that’s the most frustrating thing, like almost every civil servant they don’t care a jot if you are inconvenienced. The system is the system and you can like it or lump it. Complain all you like because it won’t change it.

I think that’s the retired police officer attitude that has come into it.

They were really good on the doctors part as they said just submit the form and the doctors letter went straight to them we never even saw it as the doctors seemed confused as to where it was to go. It was just the rest, we got their in the end but I think it was just the first time doctors were needed for shotguns and creating a backlog.
