Should the Turbo Glow Red on my combine?

Just been cutting some rather thin wheat on very light land and it did not get hot. Everything left to cut this year is being balled so it's not really going to get hot. I'll have to wait till next year to see if it's really fixed or if it's going to start melting it's wireing again.

no body looked under the bonnet of a tractor when it is working hard in the dark

There was no looking under the bonnet when I spotted it the first time. I was carting and saw it from 100 yds away. I was suppressed I could not see the turbine spinning round inside!

My cr9080 when chopping straw and unloading up a bank with 30ft header doesn't go above 82% on the engine load - on a previous thread we were losing power and smoking uphill which thanks to forum advice turned out to be blocked air intakes before the main filter - is yours working too hard ?

part of the modifications to lexions to reduce fire risk was to box in the turbo and other hot exhaust side components in heat jackets and stainless cover

In a thick crop we always run it at 100% engine load which can be interesting if you hit a really thick patch with the 30ft header!

Get the best sample at 100% and losses are very low if it's set up right. The crop thrashes the crop. I don't want to tell the driver to back off as it runs the best like that, (apart from the heat)

I have found out about an engine blow off kit which runs off the compressor and fires a blast of air at the hot parts every 5 mins.

Not sure blowing on the glowing embers is that great an idea, could cause the opposite of it's intended effect???

The blow off kit on our old tf78 nearly caused a fire when we grew naked oats - very oily dust ignited off the turbo and fell onto chaff etc - smelt it thankfully in the cab via the blower.

7250 magnum used to glow from turbo to about 2ft up exhaust one side of bonnet was red other half purplye/black:D,best tractor ever for pissing lorry drivers off with window open at a junction on a duel carage way, line exhaust up with, floor throttle and fill cab with black smoke and left them to catch up

I think if the turbo is glowing the engine is working too hard / maybe being overfueled. Just my thoughts on it - The fueling has a direct influence on the amount of heat generated (obviously) a hell of a lot of which is going into the exhaust. If the turbo's glowing then the exhaust valves must be too as the airflow over the engine will take an enormous amount of heat out of the head/manifold and turbo which are still glowing, even with the airflow that the exhaust valves don't get. Just seems to be working very hard. Just wonder if a larger engine might cope a bit better perhaps - I realise that's not much help !

Turbo on a 7710 ford glowed continually when ploughing.exhaust manifolds often glow aswell but needs to be dark to see it
Nick...
Hi Nick, I understand that but my point was that this is a combine which perhaps has a more uniform and known load so just surmising really that if in hard going if it is working that hard for 12 hours a day plus it might be better with a bigger lump. im sure its been mentioned before but something or anything glowing red hot like that is not great with dust and chaff around or I guess for reliabilty. Our combine does not work anywhere that hard for very long. Different combine though. I wonder how hot the rest of the engine is getting. particularly with a bit of dust in the rad

Just wondered if the engine has a power boost for difficult situations if it isn't running with the power boost on all the time, just a thought ?? If it has an engine loading indicator might worth while the op looking at this when its cutting to see %age engine power being used on average
