One of the proposals in any trade deal with the US is that marks of origin will not be required on food imports.

I spy an opportunity for a gratuitous pic of Liz Truss

She is hell bent on forcing through a deal with the US and happy to throw any and every food standard under the bus.

Apologies for being a pedant.......

The petition wording asks that consumers be allowed to identify food produced in the UK. ie food produced in the UK be allowed to be marked as 'produce of the UK'.

If a draft trade deal with the US says that food imported in to the UK from the US doesn't have to be labelled as 'produce of the US', then that is a different issue.

That petition could be accepted by Govt, UK food would continue to have a Union Jack on it, and food could still be imported from the US without needing a stars and stripes flag on it. Yes ?

Probably, the problem is these negotiations led bey Liz Turssedup with the US are behind closed doors to the public and not available to parliamentary scrutiny. So we have no idea what the final agreement will be. But we can assume that most of what the US wants it will get and to quote from the Independent:-

The US government also officially considers country-of-origin labelling a barrier to trade, suggesting it is likely to push for such practices to be outlawed in a free trade agreement. This would make it impossible for consumers to tell whether their product had been sourced from the US.

The US Department for Trade says it has “consistently raised concerns” about country of origin labelling at the World Trade Organisation, notably because of “the potential to favour select countries, and the impact on US exports”.

And on top of this is their demand for the removal of geographical indicators. So it could be Melton Mowbray pork pies from Wisconsin in the future. :banghead:

Sure, I'm seeing that. They - the USA - are saying that they wouldn't want their produce being labelled as being from the USA when sold in the UK.
Yes, we should be concerned about that. But, as I said, the petition doesn't address that. Rather, it says that UK produce, sold in the UK, should be allowed to be labelled as UK.
I am just concerned that the petition, with better wording, would address the issue that, I think, it is wanting to address.

There is nothing to stop anyone putting anything true on their produce over here, and there won't be. So everyone who wants to can label things as British / UK grown, produced or raised.

It is also pretty much a legal impossibility for an international trade deal to stop retailers truthfully labelling anything they are selling, and an utter impossibility for one to stop them placing a sign on or above the display from which the consumer picks up the stuff.

Not saying that retailers would voluntarily do this, but consumer pressure could force them to do so and there is nothing to stop them.

The importance is to get it debated. All aspects of US food production have huge lobbying organisations that influence outcomes that are beneficial to them. Exactly what influence have UK farmers got now it's out of the EU? I would be writing to my MP at the very least.

Interestingly, the Times were quoting only recently that the blonde ballbag had instructed the Truss not to sell U.K. farmers down the Swanee
Also a lead article in today’s paper saying that Britain are in danger of selling our collective soul for trade deals to “prove Brexit works”
