Silage / Straw / Hay Price Tracker

we had a load wheat straw delivered for £105, last week, and a load of decent hay yesterday, at £85, one hears all these massive prices, they make 'headline' news in the farming press, l wouldn't say that it's only us, getting it at sensible prices, so how much of those quoted prices, in the press, just drive prices up ? l expected to pay more for the straw, as it was 'extra' to what we had booked, £10 +. The hay, we were asked if we wanted it, at the same price, through last summer, till now, even better, he was asking if we had any 'odd' stores about, he now owes us, another load of hay !
Got quite a bit of straw spare here, listening to some of the high prices bandied around i was wondering if maybe I should have sold some but every bale sold would be extra to replace later in the year. At the high prices quoted it would probably be worthwhile but at the prices you quote it probably isn’t worth it, I know I’ve got good dry straw in the shed, who knows what harvest will bring

Why is grain production hard at the moment then? Any harder than the sheep job,any harder than beef? Dairy? Sugarbeet? No didn"t think so. Just cos sheep jobs on an up,dont forget years of barely breaking even, far as I know baling straw is a bonus over the corn (that involves abit of extra work) thats my both sides.

You need to get out more.

Arable is really hard to break even now. Straw is needed to break even.

How would you like to be selling lambs at 30 quid? I farm sheep & enjoy it but god its easy money at the moment.

I take it that's delivered, hardly 160 ex farm
we were talking about business people back along

Dry spring.

If we had cold wet spring the straw supplier would have made the extra price & very importantly would have saved the bacon of many livestock farmers.

I hate this greed word, we should all be trying to run our business's at a profit. Every decision is a gamble if you get it right 51% of the time it is better than guessing.

He said if the livestock farmers wouldn't pay 160 ex farm he would sell it to the power station, if Derick is about right at 110 delivered there is a fair old difference there, he may well be able to get something in between now but no sell it to the power station for less
Business person ?
Now its his straw he can give it away if he likes or hold on for 200 quid, do what he wants, but I can't help hoping he gets left with it and its worth about 50 quid next year

I keep hearing time and time again how there’s plenty of land available for sheep but no one wants to do the associated work that goes with it.
I must have put this on here a few times now.

You haven’t just decided in the last few months you suddenly think sheep are ok and you like them have you?
I’ve been bidding against a few of them lately

looked after sheep for 40 years

slightly reducing flock because I think this is a bubble.

I remember potatoes in 1976, it bust many growers, they over spent & over produced for 6 years on the trot.
