Skills Shortage Will This Story Ever End?

This keeps on coming up? latest this morning on breakfast TV stating by 2025 the UK will be over 200,000 short of construction workers, ie. bricklayers, carpenters etc etc? Why oh why dosnt the govt make it a priority to try to tackle this ? its not that suddenly its happened? It needs tackling in many ways in my opinion, from talking to children leaving school about the jobs and great pay? But govt needs to act to create alot more trade schools where lorry driving bricklaying etc etc can be taught ? get out of this looking down on anyone who dosnt go to university mentality?

If materials continue at the price they are, there will be plenty of builders, as nobody will be able to afford them.

There has been a skills shortage in agriculture for a long time too, so we've just had to cut out the requirement where possible.

There are still plenty of lazy b@$+@rds on the dole...

In agriculture the advances in labour saving equipment have mitigated reducing labour availability.

However advances seem to be slowing.

Maybe robotics will advance the reduction in labour further however this leaves the whole supply chain including farms susceptible to energy shortages to run the equipment.

How many people on here want/hope their children end up as truck drivers or bricklayers etc? Come to think of it, how many have kids that are currently in any of the above jobs?

Guy in the village is a one man builder, very competent.

Charges £200 per day And has more work than he can cope with.

Probably could charge £300 per day And still have plenty of work.

What is wrong with those jobs, or any of the actual, practical, someone has to do the real grafting jobs? If I had children I would be happy for them to be working and earning a living at whatever they were good at and enjoyed doing.

thats the rub a competent builder can almost charge what he wants? get as much work as he wants ? plenty of kids fresh out of uni , end up working in pc world or the like ? bored as hell on minimum wages ? it was never planned or thought of that way? just the cruel reality, now if they had only trained in a skill ?

Nothing wrong with them at all, I've done a lot of them and wouldn't be that bothered if my kids did them but I hope they take after my wife more than me, get a useful degree and build a career.

Good builders (there's plenty of bad builders) do ok, some do very well.
Its a bit like farming though, more to it than outsiders might imagine. Certainly not an easy life.

blair should be asked this? he was the one that made it the labour parties misson that more than 50 percent of children will be able to go to uni, at the time back then in the 1990s their wasnt enough of the so called well paid jobs for the number of graduates leaving university? many studies showed that ? blair should be brought to answer that and the going to war with the phoney weapons of mass distruction statment in iraq in 2003?

I think it would help a lot if all kids had do a couple of years work, between leaving school and going to Uni.
Much as we used to have to have at least a couple of years working in farming before going to college..
I am certain it would give them a far better idea of what they like to do in the world before starting a course with zero future. Many would also have a bit on money in their pockets and I suspect quite a few would give up on the idea of going to Uni. For many in civil engineering I think it should be compulsory to have a solid grounding in building and it would help avoid cock ups like Grenfell etc.
I know a couple of kids who did sports therapy one dropped out, the other despite having worked with several top end football clubs has now joined his dad in the building trade

I used to visit all the local schools, giving a talk about the opportunities in building (however, I had to rely on the school letting me talk to suitable candidates), I had an inspector see a school talk I gave, her only comment was, I was only talking to boys not girls too! However, in the end, I had no time to give those talks (as I was too busy filling in pointless paperwork and forms!). The organisation I worked for radically changed it's emphasis and in the end lost all it's training contracts with the government. Funny enough, as it slowly went downhill, the number of managers went up.
