We recently decided to build two slatted finishing sheds for b&b pigs.
The two shed are on a shared base with a slatted passage between them. Each shed has been split into four tanks below the slats with fairly large holes left at the base of the walls to connect them. Each tank has a large stirring chamber on the outside of the shed making four per shed total. The slatted passage in between has its own tank with 1 stirring chamber right at the end of the passage.
The pigs will likely be meal fed we intend to stir each tank when empty and umbilical out of each shed from one of it stirring chambers.
Firstly I’ve talked to a good few people and they all seem to agree this will work fine. My question is before the shed is finished would it be worth coring some holes through the inner walls of the shed tanks to join them to the centre passage therefore enabling all of the slurry to be extracted from one location e.g. the passage stirring chamber?
Also presuming the centre passage wouldnever fill with slurry this would gain me more storage.
Would the holes in the tank walls into the centre passage ruin the ventilation in the shed when the slurry level is lower than the holes?
If so would simple one way flap valve work to prevent air moving passage side to building side of the wall? Additionally they would enable me to stir and empty one side at a time if the otherside still had pigs in it, compared to the scenario of just having the holes connecting the sheds together.
Would a flap valve work? Or would it just act as a crappy slurry separator reducing the amount of liquid under each shed leaving more crust?
