Hi. I've just put up a leanto which is going to house my new workshop. I want to put a sliding door up about5 ft wide. What's the best way off locking it to make it secure. I will be making it myself so ant ideas considered. Anyone any photos of sliding doors and fasteners? Thanks for taking the time to read this!

On our workshop we have a personnel door built into them so the main door slides shut and sliding bolts fixed to the columns secure the door. Then the personnel door has a standard sliding latch/padlock.

weld a box with an open bottom on it, stops the padlock being cut off and difficult to jemmy open, unprotected padlocks are a waste of time now as cordless grinders take seconds to cut them off, also a security switch on the door to set off an alarm are cheap and easy to fit

Use a captive rail system (like this) for the top rollers (Box section with a slot in the bottom) so that the door can't be lifted off. Use a guide rail (like this) on the bottom of the door to help prevent the bottom being levered outwards. The same people also do door locks, but will depend on how you do the door & frame. Best solution I have seen was with a wooden sliding door that butted up to a steel post when closed - they use a hybrid lock right way up and a 350 lock upside down with the hooks latching over into the steel post. If your door is thin then you could mount the locks on blocks on the inside. The issue I have found with making things secure is that if the lock is too good then they break the building to get in instead!

It does not matter how good you make a door and locks some one will try and get in put up a good door and locks. But put in perimeter alarm system around the outside so that lets of a good noise before the get to your door that is better than cameras and big looks on doors

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
