Slurry Storage

I’m not a dairy farmer but my neighbours all are. Cement rings are mandatory.the gov’t used to pay half, so the price rose dramatically. One of my neighbours built a coverall structure over it- to keep water out, to store machinery in( which he removes when the inspector calls) and to have other options should he quit dairying: Just fill in the lagoon, and you’ve got a barn.

Have I misunderstood but isn't the main problem that ammonia joins withe particles from combustion and creates the pm 2.5
Yes I think that is correct but the resulting PM 2.5 I think is just presumed to be harmful as it's PM 2.5 but the guy presenting ( can't remember if he was DEFRA or EA as it's about 3 years ago now) said there is no actual evidence that organic PM 2.5 as he referred to causes harm just a presumption due to it's similarity to pure combustion PM 2.5 from diesel .

Just pricing up options for 3000m3 of storage, steel tank with a roof is coming out near £175k!!! Although I think this is the best option for future proofing the farm, what does everyone else think? Other option is a lagoon with a steel portal frame over the top. Not keen on floating covers but maybe I’m mistaken. Bedding on sawdust on mats.

any thoughts please??

They’ve had a fair jump, was quoted £120k in august 19 for a 550000 gallon store with a roof, just put the roof ready store up in Jan 20 for £88k as I was not going to be the only one in the county with a roofed store when many don’t even have more than a months storage.

Fair play for looking into it but I think I’d be putting it onto the back burner for a while and wait and see where we are heading, £175k on cattle infrastructure looks keen right now. I can’t see many grant schemes going forward given the current political rhetoric but will hopefully end up being proven wrong.

Just had another quote for 238k with a roof, it’s a struggle to get the figures to stack up when we could dig a lagoon twice the size for a quarter of the price

Just put in a planning application to cover your entire farm with a massive poly tunnel. Justification - your worried about methane/ammonia/carbon emissions from farming activities so you need to catch all the nasty gases.

Its the logical extension of roofing a slurry store so you’re just future proofing your business. And your saving the environment😛😛 so all objections would be ignored, the EA should even support it.

Just start saving the pennies……

they are already doing that in Southern Spain! I think it is the "cows cause climate change" lot's idea of the future of farming ~ they just haven't thought through the implications!

I just don't understand how they think it's better or how cows are to blame. I just don't get it. I really really don't understand.

It would be the first time all dairy farmers have cooperated 🤣
Maybe but how many would want to spend the money gov is talking about ? I think 99% will not want to. There is a first time for everything.
Perhaps the NFU should get everyone to say no.
Like that would ever happen. They probably think it is a good idea just so that they pick up their honors.

I’m sure most wouldn’t want to but in reality we don’t pick and choose which rules we live by and which we do not, while ag is undoubtably a smaller part of the problem than is being made out we are still going to have to clean up our act. Personally I’d rather they went after the farmers spreading all winter on stubbles or emptying their tower before a wet week in january and such like that give us all a bad name first but I fear that would be too simple.

I can't see anyone can even get so much as a quote from anyone for anything until you have clear guidance on what will actually be required. The authorities must realise that if they want to force a rule on businesses like this then there have better be a business case for it or people will just quit the industry and in big numbers this time.
