@john1968 I have delayed acknowledging your post, because I did not really know how to respond, but here goes.......

I wish I had the money to buy a big estate in the Highlands, and enough left over to keep subsidising it.

I note the thread you started about renting/sharefarming. I do not know your circumstances, and there is no need to divulge them, but there are many small parcels of land on the market in this general area for extremely little money. Sometimes they have some sort of shack on them, sometimes not. Definitely not the sort of place to bring a family. They could be suitable for a single bloke prepared to knock into shape and also prepared to live on next to nothing whilst doing so. The cost of living here is very low, so little income is needed, but obviously you do need to buy some things.

If you want to PM me about it, please feel free to do so.

Açores/Azores. Not decided which island yet, but at this stage Pico and Graciosa are the favourites. The problem will be the same as we had here - finding a decent house in a rural location with no near neighbours. Our properties have always been at a distance from other people and we could not take town or even village living. Best immediate neighbour I ever had was in Australia; he lived four and a half miles away.

We are not looking for much land this time as I have to accept it is probably time to stop farming because I cannot do the heavy work anymore. I do want a decent fruit and veg garden and to do a lot of shore fishing. Not interested in going out on boats to catch things I cannot eat and have to put back. Goes against the grain for a farmer to inflict the trauma involved on a live animal - even if it is "just" a fish. Catching something, humanely despatching and later eating it, is no different to going out and taking a lamb, pig etc. for eating.

Hope you don't mind me butting in, will this Brexit thing affect the ability of Brits buying property in Europe, or is it a case of if you have the cash You're welcome to come?
Our plan was always to semi retire in our mid fifties to a place such as yours, but not sure if that plan has been snookered now.

Rather worryingly and surprisingly , we are actually in our mid fifties now

Obviously it is just a personal opinion rather than knowing how things will be, but I cannot see a sensible government in any country refusing to accept incomers who are not going to be a drain on the economy. As I posted above, we are intending to move to the Azores (still part of Portugal) and do not envisage any problems. Just as the UK will continue to permit people to stay who are already settled there, I would expect all EU countries to reciprocate - there are quite a few members of this forum living in France, and they would be more than miffed if they were told to move back to whence they came. I really cannot forsee any problems.

If you want to PM me about anything then please feel free to do so, even if it is about something different to our sale, but in connection with your plans to move.
