So its not so smart..... I would have though picture breaking up and loosing channels would usually be signal related, have you looked out to check the aerial hasn't fallen off and the cable hasn't been chewed up by some vermin.... If it has some shitty Android operating software, who knows, a full factory reset might help... and then there are the components intentionally designed to fail in order that you have to buy a new one every 5 years or so... they call it progress

Yes it's an android like the smart šŸ™„ phone ,

just wondering if it's " carrying some bagage " somewhere that needs dumping šŸ¤· there's that much BS online saying do this do that and non of it is decisive or methodical just a salad of options that don't seem to do much ...

I haven't got a smart TV, mine is too old and refuses to die so I'm making do. But, I do have one of those Android based smart TV box things that plugs into the TV to make it "smart".

It's a real pile of junk. Can't even watch TV properly on it half the time, either it can't get a satellite signal, the picture and sound aren't in sync or it's all jittery and starts cutting out. Switching it off at the wall and switching it on again usually fixes it. I just assumed it's doing what Android does best - not work properly.

But casting and streaming works well. Youtube also works well.

I've heard similar stories about other Android TV units and smart TVs out there so I don't think I'm alone.

They call it progress. I'm not convinced.

Our new tech smart TV hates nice hot summer weather, just looses signal, even after we fitted a booster( althogh it did help tremendously to maintain the signal)

As I understand thingsā€¦ā€¦ A smart TV is by definition one that CAN connect to the internet, and you get - in my layman terms of understanding - ā€œfreesat via the internet, rather than using a satellite dish and a box, However they also have the facility to get tv via the old fashioned way of a tv aerial and via a satelite dish.

My LG smart tv is connected up via a dish and a set-top box and normally the reception is fine and we access tv via the boxes Freesat option because thatā€™s the way we used to do it before we had a smart tv. Occasionally (as in the last few weeks, maybe all the sunspot activity weā€™ve been hearing about?) the reception is poor and we get break up. If it turned out to be a major problem I could just select the LG tv option and access tv channels via this which gets the channels via the internet.

I guess it depends on how the tv has been configured, and is it directly. One ted to the internet via a cable or via WiFi, which can make a big difference.

Thats my old guy knowledge of things anyway, happy to be corrected.

Smart tvs are a waste of time imo. Get a decent tv and a fire stick. Every now and then one of the channels come up with fancy software that inevitably won't work on an old model. So save the hassle a let a firestick do the hard graft.

Serious questionā€¦..Iā€™ve got Amazon firestick, but is there an option or app that gives you the equivalent of a tv guide? With my freesat box I can just scroll down all the 600 of channels and select/record what `I wan. With the firestick I have to go to the individual app - Iplayer etc and find the programme which seem very clunky.

Firestick shows you content streamed from the internet It isn't live like freesat. Freesat has its own cataloging system of data to show you the guide much like sky tv as shows have a timed itinerary.....once they been aired, that's it, they're gone. Unless your freesat box has a recorder built in that is.

Try resetting the Android tv by press and holding the power button for about 5 seconds. Its the last ditch attempt in case things get bad. For free content, get a Roku stick (not firestick) which can install many apps that provide free streaming. This is more than what a firestick have as a firestick is a customised Roku stick that Amazon has built with certain limitations. Plex/ Pluto Tv are two good ones which provides a lot of free channels/ movies etc. Works with any tv with HDMI port. The same apps can be installed on Android or iOS as well for free tv, if you aren't restricted by internet data or speed.
