Looking at replacing my half inch socket set do I go 6 sided or 12th sided pro and cons please
Twelve point will fit onto rusted/deformed heads better, but won't transmit as much force. Also they are better for access in tight spaces, but this advantage is somewhat diminished today with the very fine ratchets available.

Six point will grip much better, and wall drive ones even more so. Sealey market their wall drive six points as being able to transmit up to 30% more torque.

I tend to use six point impact sockets most frequently.

All mine are snap on and will out turn anything else I've ever used.

um reminds me I need a repair kit for my 3/4 snap off ratchet, dam good ratchet though.

I have a good mix of sockets some snap on, Teng, Britool, Signet, Draper for the 3/4 drive there all good and do the job fine, and I wouldn't say a snap on socket will out turn another decent brand assuming they are both 6point or 12point.

Bit off topic but What I do need is a 19mm open ended spanner that the open end is straight with the handle not at a 20 deg angle, cant find one so will have to bend an old one!

Just out of interest why does it need to be straight

Its for manitou handbrake caliper mounting bolts.
Normal open end will go on but not enough room to get on the next set of flats after spanner hits gearbox so plan is to use a combination of a normal open end followed by a straight end followed by a normal one again to loosen or tighten the locking nuts on the bolts. Its only a problem on the powershft boxes.

I wondered if a pipe nut spanner would do it (not familiar with manitou handbrake)

I have got it for moving the cylinder up on the JF but it is one of these tools when you have got it you find other uses for.
