Spring Barley N

Its raining.A nice soft rain that will get the chance to soak in and do some good.My concern is,it's washing a whole lot of Nitrogen down into the root zone and we're way past the three leaf stage.Any thoughts?

I thought everyone in the NE was getting rain just now.
We've had bugger all overnight. Hopefully materialise today.

Last weekends rain washed the N down to roots of some of our spring barley that was struggling. Gone a nice shade of dark green.

Are you worried about N levels for low N malting?

Aye.We're due a high N year. The skinnings issue is getting rather tedious.

Surely grain n content will depend on more factors than crop stage when rain came?
Most definitely, but I think a lot of barley will be getting a hit of N at a later than ideal growth stage. That could result in higher grain N.Theres a reason why we put all our N on before the 3 leaf stage. Its also why it used to be considered risky to use urea. There was a fear that urea wouldn't become available to the plant until too late, thus going to the ear.

Usually go with 105 units N which is 130kg N.
This is for under 1.65N market. Cut it back to 120kg N on fields with a history of producing higher Nitrogens though.

All been on at these rates for 3 weeks now. Got some proper rain overnight so hopefully that should be it made available to the plant at long last.

I was wondering the same to be honest. We put on 120kg N post emergence and got reasonable germination as there was some moisture in the soil. However since the 12mm we had 2 weeks ago it's filled in remarkably and since then another 40mm so I'm wondering whether to throw on 40-50kg but also hesitant because it's malting.

I put 200kgs of urea on the seedbed before drilling and it had about 40t/ha fym before ploughing. First year I've just lumped it all on like that but it was so bloody dry afterwards I am very glad I did.

If you are worried about high N, then I would go out with fert spreader and give it plenty!

You will get a good yield of feed barley with no stress about quality, and I will have one person less competing in the malting barley market. :):):)

Haha. Not really worried. My barley will make malting and it will yield amongst the highest in Scotland. It always does.More to do with the quality of my land than the quality of my management,I might add.

I had same concerns about high N a few weeks ago. This was main reason I irrigated all my barley. Interestingly the areas missed by the water still stand out clearly, despite the recent rains.
