I thought everyone in the NE was getting rain just now.Your lucky it's raining.
We've had bugger all overnight. Hopefully materialise today.I thought everyone in the NE was getting rain just now.
Aye.We're due a high N year. The skinnings issue is getting rather tedious. We've had bugger all overnight. Hopefully materialise today.
Last weekends rain washed the N down to roots of some of our spring barley that was struggling. Gone a nice shade of dark green.
Are you worried about N levels for low N malting?

Most definitely, but I think a lot of barley will be getting a hit of N at a later than ideal growth stage. That could result in higher grain N.Theres a reason why we put all our N on before the 3 leaf stage. Its also why it used to be considered risky to use urea. There was a fear that urea wouldn't become available to the plant until too late, thus going to the ear.Surely grain n content will depend on more factors than crop stage when rain came?
Its raining.A nice soft rain that will get the chance to soak in and do some good.My concern is,it's washing a whole lot of Nitrogen down into the root zone and we're way past the three leaf stage.Any thoughts?
165kgs per ha gone in ours as AD waste which is supposed to be 85% available
Feed not malting crop
No plan for any bought in N but will be watching it closely !
Shame we can't settle on units/ acre, or something. Gets confusing when some post units/ acre, some kg / acre, some kg/ ha, some units/ ha......

Haha. Not really worried. My barley will make malting and it will yield amongst the highest in Scotland. It always does.More to do with the quality of my land than the quality of my management,I might add.If you are worried about high N, then I would go out with fert spreader and give it plenty!
You will get a good yield of feed barley with no stress about quality, and I will have one person less competing in the malting barley market.
