Spring cropping, are you starting?

Has anyone been brave and started drilling or looking at drilling yet? I’ve seen some winter wheat going in still on beet land or failed OSR.

I’m tempted myself with weather and conditions being favourable and then it’s pushed through and growing by the time it does turn and we can’t get on the land.

Have some more winter wheat to drill but it's a bit wet at the moment just need another week of dry weather

My cover crops are knee high and growing well. I'll get the glyphosate delivered in a day or two & think about spraying them off later in the month. The sheep are gradually clearing the turnips. No plans to think seriously about drilling for another 6 weeks yet. I don't fancy redrilling them in April.

Spring cropping ground still covered in cover crops, due to be sprayed off in the next 2 weeks when I can. Not sure I want to get drilling barley now, even if it will go, with the potential forecast for cold temps, frost and snow for later in the month just as it would be emerging:scratchhead:

We have this debate every year on here. @marcot and is it @Lincsman (?) or someone that way are always early on their light soils. Personally on my farm I plan not to start spring drilling until after 1st feb but won't be stressing until end of feb. Everyone and their farm is different.

Got some grass to put in and thinking I’d rather it be sat there in the field rather than in the bag as conditions are so good. That said it’s -3 here today and I wouldn’t want any snow on it.

My third cover crop of blackgrass hasn't fully emerged yet, last year we sprayed off in February and killed a lot then sprayed again in April and killed a lot more. Drilling on St Georges day, deafened by cuckoos still yielded 3 tonnes an acre.
Living the dream! On the best of years I would be delighted with 3t sb and I would bet it would need to be drilled pre March 14th on this farm anyway.

Drilling ww after beet here today, the ground has hazed out a treat and conditions are perfect.
It was a toss up between barley and wheat. Dad said he prefers combining wheat so we went with that, the next field after beet which well finish lifting after we've finished drilling will go in spring barley hopefully later next week.

Crack on, I say

I've got half the farm to sow (992 ac) but have seen what the yield effects of forcing direct drilling are when the soil conditions aren't right.
