Spring drilling 2021

Ploughing the last field for beet today but won't be drilled for a day or two yet. We had just enough rain to damped the top and no dry in-between the showers and incredibly a damp spot which I struggled to get through.

I did pick up another flexi coil from @Breckland Boy neighbour which I'm absolutely loving, it's putting the ground down really well.

How do you get on with lemken drill ,can they put it in ,ok look a bit light in spring department , ,,got one in yard at minute ,
looking at similar set up to yours ,so can swap power harrow ,over to a cultivator for light land ,
I get of fine with it tbh . In the process of changing to new front split hopper just now as old one is starting to give bother with electric metering for seed as can’t get bits now and mechanical gearbox for Fert is slipping a bit so new one will have lemken metering . I like it for being light and ease of filling and will climb my steep land .

Earliest finish for beans and barley since 2012

waiting now for warmer weather for canary seed and borage

got 7 mm rain last night and this morning pity I dint have the rest of the Fert on but the rain was largely unforcast
How long have you grown borage for? And if for a few years how much of a problem are volunteers?
I grew borage about 14 years ago for one season only and am still seeing volunteers which are quite stubborn to eradicate. Financially it was a very sound crop though.

Just the opposite here. Rushed around getting fertiliser on for my uncle and ourselves because 7mm rain forecast .... guess what, not enough to register in the rain gauge 😤

1mm here Thursday night. Snow on the Cleveland Hills this morning but nothing here. Working up the last field with a Topdown and it's drying out fast. Seed is either germinating nicely or sat in dust. No rain in the forecast. :(

Beet drilled 2 weeks ago mostly not chitted. This has all the hallmarks of last year. Growth stages will soon be wildly apart again. Not good at all.
Zero tilled crops looking by farm the best. Anything thats been moved has lost nearly all moisture in the top few inches.

Got beet drilled day before good Friday only just chitted, they're in moisture it's just so dammed cold. I wonder if rothamsteads byv model took into account that a lot of beet will hardly be out the ground by may and won't be past 12 leaves by the time aphid migration happens when saying we didn't need neonics

Yes I think temp may well be more of the issue but I would have expected it to chit. When the growth stages are wild like last year you only really get the first crop that emerges.

I now wonder if we should have waited to drill next week with higher seed rate
less weeds warmer soil faster emergence

I was thinking I maybe should have waited for a bit of moisture before direct drilling my barley on heavy land but hoping any that doesn’t chit won’t be too far behind with this cold when it does rain
