How are people getting on now we are paying for a dry Jan/Feb?
Spring barley drilled 2 weeks ago, not through yet. Drilled this first as on heavy ground which we managed to muck in Feb but no ploughing and it went in well.
Some spring beans drilled 10 days ago and had another go this afternoon with the claydon and going reasonably well. Light kind land.

Can't remember the last time we had 24 hrs without rain.
The dry Feb seems along time ago.
Looking like another 10 days of rainyness.
Will be getting v behind by then.

Tipped out gauge today, 59mm of rain for all March, including the snowy bits.
Not excessive, and dried like bejaysus yesterday, drizzly showers this afternoon though.
Stream came up and back down again couple of times, doubt it's made it into the groundwater tbh.

Finished up on the 5th of march. Havent had a chance to see if anything has come up yet. Was all ploughed in the autumn except for two fields that I did in the spring prior to drilling, one of which was done with a superflow and one of which was ploughed. Will be interesting to see if that has made any difference. I did manage to get a look at it at the begining of last week, wasnt able to walk in the field though as was so wet.

Barley seed came last week, will be well into April before it's sown this year, normally try and have it by the 2nd/3rd week in March but nowhere near dry enough yet, only 35ac to do and it's to be undersown with grass so no panic yet, still got K fert to go on everything and no N&S on yet either, sprayer will need to be going soon as well 🙈

We usually aim to be done (or finishing up) by cheltenham. Wanted to go early rather than late this year as last year we were drilling spring oats towards the end of april on some heavier clay land (delayed due to drainage works) Crop was utterly rubbish, barely anything grew, was more weed than oat. Didnt want a repeat. Hope i dont regret it.

Little bit of blackgrass coming through in these oats so will nip through with an inter row hoe when it dries up.

Finished SB drilling on March 4th, just about to poke through later this week I would think, it has half the Urea and Polysulphate on.
Looking rubbish until the end of the month so will have to take every opportunity to get on when we can, there’s going to be a backlog of fert spreading building up this week

rightly or wrongly we put half down the spout then the balance on just before the rain started on the spring crops. urea and sulphur in the form of amidas.
last year it was so dry I think the spring crops didn't even use the balance on the fertiliser so went earlier this time.

The balance of the N on the SB is actually some carried over AN from last year so I’m relatively relaxed about that given how wet it is now and that it’s not up yet, putting all the Urea on before emergence would be a pretty good bet I would say, all the N last year was on before the last bit of rain at the end of March thankfully !!
Getting the balance of Urea on the WW and WB is more of a priority for me
