Spring linseed advice please.

My highest yielding crop of linseed was sown 27th Feb into a perfect seedbed. That was back when we had neonic seed dressings though so flax flea beetle didn’t nibble much. It took ages to emerge but did well.

Ah the beauty of the bluff. Or is it a double bluff? Or a triple? Who knows.

It's a terrible crop = I'm filling my boots.

Or does it?

Or is it really a terrible crop, but i want you to think I'm growing loads and you should too, so that your combine can catch fire and I can pinch your acres?

Or is it actually a brilliant crop and I want to share the love?

No idea.

But what i do know that I am planning on drilling a bit chunk this year. (No, really, I am).

Chopping the straw....IDK about that fellas... Clive, did you leave it to ripen off normally or what?
In the set aside days of long ago, grew some industrial linseed on a block of set aside ground. Bloody stuff grew 3 foot tall then went flat as a pankake. One field went through the chopper ..... big big BIG mistake, even a set of Simba 2Bs just rolled over the top of the chopped straw! Spent a morning with a haybob moving the straw off the headland then torched it .... did have fire brigade out

I was always given the 'boy' job of moving the bales once it was baled. This was back when everyone regloned the stuff. Big water volumes and you did it in the cool as well. The bolls would dry to a crisp but the straw was still stood there and green. Combine the stuff and let it fall out the back of the combine like lumps of cotton wool. Big bale then put along gamestrips for the birds or stack and burn.

One year the keeper saw us combining it so came out to tell me where to put the bales, as an experiment he decided to light some of the cotton wool lying about, with a bit of wind behind it the fire spread in seconds and even the green standing stalks burnt to a cinder, it was like something out of a cartoon. Luckily the fields were all surrounded by CSS grass strips (+/- the obligatory ragwort) so the fire didn't do any harm once it reached the field edge.

Probably ought to share what I am doing, having started the thread.
Got some Bingo C2 to plant a couple of ha, will just dip a toe in this year and shall have some on a trailer to draw a big fss seed rate from for next year.... assuming the combine doesn't burn, or we never manage to cut it, or the flax beetle dont nobble it, etc.
Sha'nt be planting it yet a couple of weeks though.
Thanks for the input.
As an aside, there is some winter linseed next door, which has come through better than ok, will be interesting to watch.

We grew 50 acres of empress last year For the 1st time in my working life. Bought seed, direct drilled, No weed control was needed apart from Glyphosate pre drilling. 180kg/ha of Nitram In 2 splits and it yielded near about a tons to the acre. Having more this year.

it was rubbish I remember you telling me so!!

Well, I can take you to two farmers in South Lincolnshire who sowed Linseed last April.
First farmer 30 hectares - none harvested. Previous year managed to harvest about 20 hectares out of 50 hectares and sold a truck load. He has 58 hectares winter Linseed this year which does look well.
Second farmer 40 hectares (8 hectare not harvested), balance was harvested after a fashion, result was (edited said two, sorry meant one) one artic truck loads and about 5 ton still left for Premium Crops to pick up. He has been growing 40 hectare of so Linseed for 14 years or so, some reasonable results lot moderate. 40ha planned for this year - much better seedbed expected this year, but expect usual flax flea beetle attack - we just leave them to get on with it and leave nature to its own.

So a contrasting view. But all jolly interesting. I do like the Purple flowers in June/early July.
