spring sown forage crop

What could be planted this spring to provide a bulky forage by the summer that can be round baled?
I am looking for the most Bales/Acre either single cut, or 2-3 cuts, But also high quality feed for suckler cows

Westerwolds? IRG? Perhaps barley / oats and cut for wholecrop?

We undersowed grass with barley/oats last year. Round baled it, cows loved it.

Italian ryegrass. Tried it last year for the 1st time and Will do it again. With red clover as well possibly.?

We had a red clover ryegrass mix but sown in early august one year, two good cuts for three years organic giving about 16/17 bales in two cuts no fert

I have done wholecrop before, but never with grass or as a mix with peas, barley
Would you drill the cereals first? then broadcast the grass seed & roll?

Correct, some say einbock the grass seed in a couple of weeks after the corn, never done that ourselves though.

I had one guy some years ago, two fields, missed sowing grass in the second by about 10 days due to weather, it was never as good. I'd roll the mix in nice and tight, broadcast the IRG and give it a further roll.

seeing it's a sucker cow why looking for dairy milking silage ?? and more so if yer going to buff it out with lower value filler while feeding out
i'd put the grass in to eat standing and mow the older paddocks feed up with fert and then mow keeping qulity in the older stands

seems arse backwards to feed out rocket fuel and feed out filler to balance it when the older grass is there sole diet same as the sheep men i belive sucker cows and sheep will have to look at there cost with riseing inputs

Look at the costs of spring cereals this year. I'm steering away from Barley and peas due to cost. Will put in a short term gras to get me through this year cheaper.

dose not matter if it's NZ or the UK it's costs here alot of talk on higher value standing feed for grazeing and poorer bulk feed for winter feeding bit point less grazeing poorer feed and adding a huge cost on to finshing feed just to bale and then feed out

intresting i used to deal with a lot of dairy farmers with grazeing and silages also drilling for them the euro /dutch farmers just shook there heads at how the kiwis were following ideas ... rocket fuel for finshing gut fill for others
