Stoic bunch farmers

Have to say it says an awful amount about our professions stoic demeanour as many people would be on anti depressants and in therapy in other trades faced with what has been thrown at us in the last 18 months.
It is a constant diet of bad news, changing rules and options on top of unrelenting bad weather and you steel yourself to not look at a forecast for a week genuinely expecting to see a change and there is none , all that has happened is the clock has ticked on .
I love reading the threads and replies on here handling all this with a good hint of sarcasm and deadpan British humour , no wonder our enemies never could figure us out or beat us .

I’ve farmed both sides of the pond and without a doubt couldn’t face farming under the rules and scrutiny that you lot do. Lots of respect to you all. At the moment farming here is a walk in the park with little rules to abide by outside of common farm practices.
with all the rules and regulations for ever decreasing returns I’m surprised some farm organization hasn’t stepped up to challenge the authorities. Nfu. No fing use. Should be fighting in your corner not stroking the governments ego just to keep their jobs.
the British stiff upper lip and bred in stubborness
shouldn’t be used as a tool against an industry and way of life the feeds everyone

Vet student last night as she was leaving us-

‘I take my hat off to you, but I’m so glad I don’t have to do anything with sheep ever again’. 🤣
She was a total walloper mind.
Another one destined to just do dogs, cats and guinea-pigs then🙄

I tell all those who come here, "If I ever hear you've dropped large animals and are working it a small animal practice, I will hunt you down and rip up your diploma." in my best Liam Neilson voice..

How do you know plenty aren’t on anti-depressants? And, given suicide rates in our industry, perhaps more should seek help?🤷‍♂️

The enjoyment in the job is getting very thin now. Between the extremes of weather, a government that doesn't give a toss, a green lobby that wants to exterminate us and groups within the industry that want to cripple us with red tape, it's pretty hard to see much improvement. It doesn't help that x amount of acres or head of stock has to be farmed, whilst doing so with as little labour as possible to make a profit. Farming used to be a community endeavour with many to share the load.

When I started, the gov - and related quangos- couldn't have been more helpful. Now as said they are well and truly the enemy. They present a real threat. It would be nice to think its just a bunch of townies/greens/vegetarians making policy but it isn't 👿

It's obvious if you read the policies. There's the usual TGV stuff (and there's a limit to how many ways you can say the same thing), then some genuine technical phrasing that they couldn't possibly come up with on their own.

If they're of such elevated erudition, I think they should be giving seminars for us to go to and be educated. But they won't. I sadly lost the video of a former pupil of mine, standing up at an NFU do and giving Youless hell on wheels about an issue. I struggle to remain stoic.

Another rant over.

Rang to pay for my farm assurance yesterday (another £330 wasted). Greeted by an automated message, no thank you for calling or anything pleasant.

First bit of message ‘if you subject any members of our staff to any abuse you will liable to suspensension from our scheme’, then the various options 😳😳

Doctors surgery has a sign up about abuse of staff, I wonder why no one clicks that abuse of staff is because of the appalling service we receive from a myriad of organisations, maybe the answer isn't to give messages about abuse of staff, rather it is to provide the type of service that is appropriate (and empower people rather than treat them like imbeciles and infantilise them).

2012 was ‘the year from hell’ in this area, it just peed it down from April to the following May, with a merciful break in August for harvest.

When the combine broke in October, and when it was too pee wet through to do anything, Mrs PSQ dragged me away for a few days to London, and it saved my sanity. 4 days away from the farm and its problems and I felt completely refreshed. Finished harvest on bonfire night (first and last year of spring beans) and mauled some late wheat in that would have been saved by a half decent spring, which turned out to be atrocious.

Point being, if it’s getting you down and there’s nothing doing in the forecast, pull the pin and get away. Go somewhere nice for a break, build yourself up for a few days, and recharge the batteries. Staying put just to stare at the wet ground and the long term forecast for another week won’t change a thing.

Keep on ranting, especially if it makes you feel better - I do 👍

It's what makes you 'stoic', IMHO.

Without that 'valve' to 'let offsteam', I'm sure things would get me down but I've got to the stage where I don't care what I say to anybody and if they don't like it/can't take it, then that's just 'tough bananas'.

Mrs YB gets a bit embarrassed if she's there when 'I go off on one' but I don't bear fools gladly and feckin eejits, even less.
