I suppose it's quite feasible. I remember him saying the transmitters they were experimenting with only went between the buildings on the Marconi site, so there was no "real" danger to the public.
I think that I first heard of it from my oldest uncle - an ex Battle of Britain pilot who stayed on in the RAF into the 50s. I know that a lot of his stories were plain fact, but some may have been stretched a bit to entertain a young nephew.
I've just done another search and can't find anything substantive, however I know of a few things from my time in the Army which aren't on the public radar and have heard plausible tell of many more, so perhaps the microwave-fried airmen were hushed-up...
