Looks like a holiday in Wales then ,that's a five hour drive for me . He's just the guy I need .
It does seem as though a second opinion might be useful. You could try your local cycling club. I am sure you would pick up a load of useful stuff if you went for a few rides with some experienced riders, who could actually see you on your bike. Cyclists are very good at weighing up their competition and most will have worked though bike fit issues of their own. I think you will find that many are quite particular about the saddle they use!!!

he’s had it since he was 4 and is now coming up 8. It’s been amazing and has done some mileage!
This year he joined a tri club so I got him a second hand road bike

we’ve been practising slowly and balance is now all good but the gears and brakes are a bit of an issue! I was thinking it’s just a case of growing in to it like he did his isla. Last week I got on it and even I struggled to reach! (But I’m only 5ft with stumpy fingers)
He’s been competing on his isla still but he’s getting pretty bion it. I was going to buy him the identical isla but just a bigger size for home, off-roading (and tri until he’s mastered the road bike properly) but on the website I’ve just seen this….

would this be ok for everything? How off today can it go and is it fast like a normal road bike?

Going on my kids I think they prefer flat handlebars until they are about 11 and they can still do track/ cyclepaths and trails . Why not look for a Wiggins Chatres locally for about £100 rather than spending on the isla

So a first for TFF and me, you can see what I look like

16km, 3930 feet of climbing, was really tough but I did it. Not helped by hitting a kerb riding around lake Geneva a couple of days before. Hence the bandages you can see in the photo and others you can’t. Torrential rain down the other side of Colombiere, I have never been so cold wet and scared cycling before. I would love to do a trip to the mountains again.

I'm planning to ride something similar this weekend, the Dunwich Dynamo. It's 120 miles from East London out to the coast at Dunwich, again leaving at 8-9pm and arriving after sunrise. It'll be my first 100+ mile ride and I'm going with a group of good riding friends so looking forward to it.

1st century ride in the dark, that will be a great achievement. Hope you have good lights 😁
