straw alternative for deep bedding

A lot in the Midlands use wood waste and sell their own straw .

Also know a big cattle dealer who buys cheap damp straw .tops anything . Puts a complete layer on the floor and that's it for the winter . Suppose it depends on how heavy it's stocked

Arb Waste, through a fine mesh screen - Alot of guys use that near me - under straw or carboard shreddings, lasts a winter and is usually free from tree surgeons.

We did this when I was in the midlands but it never was good.. it could often be wet which didn't absorb anything, it was fine as a base layer but straw on top was always best.
I can't see how much can be better than straw? What about OSR straw as it's much cheaper?
Usually better when it"s free from tree surgeons,nails, bricks & bale wrap!

Bracken or rushes?
Used to help someone calve and his cows were on some lime stuff. Dont know exactly what it was or were he got it from though.
saw some on deep peat, cows and calves, very clean

just something to put a dry base in as on concrete floors and take a lot of straw to get a decent bed , we'd bed straw on top after , some sheds we havent cleaned out as scrape passages and they've kept clean and dry with about a foot depth of muck and a slight scatter of straw daily
Ive never tried it but apparently its ok if you rot the manure pile well enough and turn it once to rot again so its like compost being spread
That would work,, I've heard the seed can survive 20 years out of the ground .
Even longer i think seeds are amazingly tough. Someone told me dock seeds can live for 100 years before germinating

I know that I have said this on here before, but next door to us is an Iron Age fort that was eventually used by the Romans. They excavated some grain pits and charlock grew in the spoil from the bottom of the pit. So I would think 100 years for a dock is child's play!
