That don't seem that dear if their 4x4 squares at 500kgsI certainly will never forget the auction in november when you could have heard a pin drop and the 4x4hay made £45 per bale and 4x4 straw £33 !

Not a hope in hell of it being that expensive off the field.
Because that would put it delivered on farm at £130t and at that money farmers will not buy more than the odd load and wait until the winter to buy the rest.
£130t is totally unsustainable for livestock producers.
4x4 rounds at 250kg eachThat don't seem that dear if their 4x4 squares at 500kgs
if they wait while winter it may not be there (see above) despite your opinion that crops look well. In other areas things are different in terms of growth stage and straw potential yield which is now apparent at least here .though as yet grain yield is still all to play for
Yes and £40 per tonne baled off the field is unsustainable for arable farmers, so for the last 5 years while straw traders and end users have bagged it of us, it in turn has bitten many on the arse, £55 tonne baled off the field is where it needs to be minimum.
Yea I would agree with you @willy that it needs to be £55/60t ex field, imo that would be a workable and sustainable price for both seller and buyer.
( would put straw at £85/90t delivered in price )
No need to wait for rain just get on and bale itIf you’re in a wet area like the SW £60/t ex field isn’t enough for all the hassle you get with rain after cutting and then having to turn straw and not being able to clear the ground in time.
No need to wait for rain just get on and bale it
you wouldn't give up my day job, that's a silly statement as you haven't got my day jobI wouldn’t give up your day job to become a comedian.
ok but what has this got to do with getting on with it and baling up straw before it rains ?You are indeed correct, i should have been more thoughtful in my reply and instead i should have said Don't give up your day job to become a comedian.

Not always possible for a whole host of different and unconnected reasons why you cannot always bale behind the combine.
I seem to manage about 90% of the timeNot always possible for a whole host of different and unconnected reasons why you cannot always bale behind the combine.
people i.e the arable chaps wont let it go for stupid money if they have done their sums re the costs of removing straw which are more than it seems to some folksPeople wont pay stupid money for it off the field for various reasons.
Prices of £100t+ for straw is just not viable for livestock farmers in the long term.
