Stubble turnips added to herbal ley

Surely a large leafed agressive for forage plant would be at odds ( if not a total juxtaposition) with the idea and practicality of the slow but sure establishment of a lower producing ultimately..... ' gentle herbal' ley

As a nurse plant a thin stand of barley would be better.

I have the turnips in a bag, sweepings from the combine, my idea was to grow them with a grass ley and maybe graze through the winter months with lambs, mob graze it so not to poach the ground. Then hopefully in the spring you have a grass ley to push on with. If its a wet winter like last year, would be interesting.

Ah I see you grew them for seed? That sounds interesting.

Yes will be fine then .
Woukd want to be heavily grazed tho especially on anything but very well drained soil.
normally a very light seed rate of stubble turnips or rape is put with a grass seed mix to help bulk up bit the forage amount for first grazing, in autumn works quite well.

turnips would go very light maybe 100 -200 grams per ha dont want to shade out the slower grasses herbs
rapes etc 1/2 a kg per ha would be heaps
yer herbal ley will not be cheep alot of plants in there will be slower to get going
oats etc. sown thin would help as more open and give shelter

Has anyone had any good results putting turnip, rape on a 12 month old grass lay, only asking as i have one lay that looks a bit thin in places and thinking of putting some on there as well to bulk it up a bit.
