I've got plenty here now aprox £3.50 kg , no idea if that's competive or not but leaves a bit for me
Sounds about right Iv ordered a load already for this year but didn’t bother to ask price it’s about the only seed iv bought that’s ever been not worth asking a price on …
I will want some cover crop seed sometime early august that I’ll give you chance of.. not sure what too grow yet last years radish/vetch mix I grew was a bit of a disappointment but I don’t know if that was just down too the relentless frost/ snow or if it wasn’t suited too the heavy land it went on

I think most things were a disappointment. It seemed to rain none stop here most of the Autumn and Winter apart from when it was freezing cold

Yeah I may give it another go… quite limited on what I can grow on his land as it goes into spring rape so brassica all out the question

At risk of hi jacking this thread about agency and authority, I wondered about costings for the circumstances the OP describes.
If I leave the grass, weeds, and volunteer barley and just get winter sheep in, I get 10 weeks x 2 sheep x £1.05 = £21 per acre fairly reliably for zero cost. The s. Turnip option involves
Seed
Fert?
Roughing up ground with a power Harrow as it is all we have
Broadcast with fert spreader
Ring roll.
I can cost the above for my farm and others will have different machines available.
But what is a realistic average output? I would think the turnip crop would be better than the grass, but unreliable due to weather after drilling and weed competition.
If there is any data it might be useful to many mixed farmers.

Would cost me £105 acre, Spray Drill Seed Firtilizer. If it's into grass you can't do that reliably without Spraying @£10 acre
So it's not really viable as an option on my place, if someone needs to sow Turnips for a specific reason or into stubbles that have minimum costs then maybe so , others seem to have problems going grass to grass when reseeding so again maybe worth it , I've never had a problem seeding this way though
If your going into stubbles which I'm not sure if you are then how are yoh getting £1 head to graze weeds and a bit of volunteer barley ?
I don't get £1 head to graze silage aftermath that fatten a lot of lambs

Maybe I'm wrong to include a Firtilizer Cost of £40 acre as a lot if that will be returned through grazing , but roots won't crop if yiu don't feed them

Yes it is surprising how much grows after SB.
Normal winter sheep just attack it later on in winter and do very well on it.
I don’t think we are good at killing the grass and weeds with normal herbicide.
I can see lots of work for marginal gain.
Thanks for the heads up.

We never sprayed it at all, put a tiny bit of fert on that was left over and that was only thing it had, combined, direct drilled and a tiny bit of fert … -7 ish for 3 nights in a row just murdered it

Yet stubble turnips here were least affected by that frost in December, when usually they are easily wiped out.
Beet tops went overnight, and even maincrop turnips were hit far harder than the stubble turnips. :scratchhead:

I will stick with sowing various fodder crops, to avoid putting all my eggs in one basket. It can’t all go wrong, surely…
