Anyone growing typhon?
Used to see quite a bit but rarely see it now
Mostly typhon bit of Maris kestrel bit of green globe; being grazed now will be double cropped similar mix to provide winter keep. Lambs at other end of same field want to get it planted within next 30 days.

Without Nitrogen, turnips won't yield very well at all. A crop grown that way won't pay anything much for tack sheep.

If you don't spray the volunteers off, they grow thickly and swamp the turnips out. The cereal volunteers will provide very little feed compared to the root crop they displace.
Would turnips need more nitrogen if DD as opposed to ploughing? Thinking there won't be such a breakdown of soil N following PP if it's not ploughed.
Looking in my copy ofRB209 and it recommends 100kg/ha N at index 0, 75 at index 1 and 50 at index 2, but I guess with the age of the copy (1994), it would be based on ploughed land.
On the other hand I suppose with DD all the sheep sh!t on the surface will be available!

I've attached the current RB209 (May 2107) for grass and forage crops, it's split into different sections now.

Broadcast in with a guttler greenmaster.
Would this justify the extra kilo???
Originally the plan was to put 100% stubble turnips but seeing that this is my first time at this sort of forage crop, I thought I'd try a bit of hybrid and kale to see how it bulked out

For the extra cost of a kilo of turnips it's your decision.
Sowing them at a higher rate the bulbs don't grow to their full potential.
1.5-2 kg per acre is usually plenty but some sow them higher when broadcasting

Planning on putting in 2kg of Samson stubble turnip along with 0.5kg of redstart and 0.5kg of Maris kestrel this week.

All thoughts welcome

As above, 1.5-2kg/ac is more than enough. Any higher and you will end up with all leaf and very little bulb, which is higher DM & energy. Personally I'd drop the kale out, not least as it's dear seed comparatively, but it won't add much yield over the Redstart when it's drilled this late.
