Just taken back a smallish 4ac piece of ground , my landlord grew some barley in for a few years , wasnt sprayed and was full of creeping thistles ,now want it back to pasture they cut barley last week , high stubble so still some thistle stubble there ( a lot of white clover in bottom) , just wondered if better to spray with roundup , or give it a dose of thistlex when its shot a bit in a few weeks , before putting in some grass/ red clover later or next spring (have an acre of lucerne seed might put in with it to use it up ) just wondered best way to handle it .

Glysophate off .
10 days ,cultivate ,sow.
When is cut off to sow grass ,maybe soon.
Or disc stubble turnip reseed in spring?
will glyposate give a good kill on thistles , or will i have to spray thistex again next summer ? no point in putting in clover / lucerne if need to spray again next year

Glyphosate now, thistlex next year, sow clover later next year. If it is like all other old pastures, thistles won't be the only thing that needs spraying off next year, thistlex will do most of those although I am not sure of the label and new grass thinking about it.

I used Leystar in my weedy reseed this Spring and thistlex is not necessary now

Yeah , spray now dont waste anymore time,

Use Kyleo,
or just glyphosate but with an adjuvant/ wetter
Red clover shouldve been in the ground by now , and its too late for lucerne as well.

yea half thinking of leaving stubble (there is green in bottom ) grazing through winter , landlord will plough with his t20 when bare , let frost on roots , and tackling next spring . as its getting late . especially if weather is getting catchy , then seed straight grass and over sow with clover later

A good dose of Glyphosate (& water conditioner) now, which will take out most weeds & grasses but leave the existing clover. Reseed (with clover), then use Spruce & Triad to take out seedling blw's while there are only young ones there, leaving the clover safe.
