Suckled calf sales

Have seen some strong stores sold this autumn which are obviously well back on the year but haven't seen any calves sold yet!? Keep hearing reports that the best are still on par with last year but the also rans are a struggle!? Is this the case!? Got 20 or to of the smarter types to sell in November.

Tidy ones are pretty much the same as last year , not that last year was great. The sales are only just getting going . Knighton had there first on tuesday but i havent had the report. 220-230 ppk on average for tidy things i have heard elsewhere. I know theres a host of problems with buying single suckled hfr calves ie they sometimes havent been weaned until sale day ,pneumonia, stole the bull etc BUT they look great value to me if you dont suffer the above problems.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but i cannot understand farmers keeping them on farms and areas in the country where six month winters are the norm.

In the UK 6month winters are the norm for the majority

Wrong type of cattle and incorrect management for the local environment. Removal of subs will be the end of such hobby farming.

Disagree, and resent the "hobby farming" remark.

Mixed farm here I can increase my income substantially by housing the cattle and running higher level of ewes. If the cattle were out here, we would be f**ked year round and income would be drastically down because the farm simply could not be so productive.

Think you need to try it for yourself before you preach to the rest.

Do your cattle make an operating profit?
