Grégoire Besson UK Group and Sulky Burel UK appoint Robert Thurkettle as Managing Director


Cultivation equipment manufacturer Grégoire Besson UK Group and seeding and fertilisation equipment manufacturer Sulky Burel UK have appointed Robert Thurkettle as Managing Director for the UK market.

In 2017 the family-owned French machinery manufacturers agreed to collaborate on the sales, marketing and customer service of Grégoire Besson, Sulky Burel and Rabe products in the UK to improve efficiencies and strengthen their existing relationship. The companies share a single head office and a parts distribution centre in Bourne, Lincolnshire.


The collaboration takes on a new dimension with the recent appointment of Robert Thurkettle as Managing Director. He will be working closely with Ailsa Walker who has overseen the restructure and growth of the two businesses since 2017.


Robert has many years of experience in the farm machinery sector; as a farm manager for Sentry Farming, in sales at John Deere dealer Ben Burgess, and as Dealer Principal at AGCO dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen (TNS) in Ely, Cambridgeshire, where he oversaw the restructure and move of their head office and satellite office to a new purpose-built head office. More recently, Robert managed area sales for market-leading GPS equipment supplier, LH Agro.


On his new role, Robert says: “I’m delighted to have been appointed by Grégoire Besson UK Group and Sulky Burel UK. This is an exciting time in agriculture, with a myriad of opportunities and challenges for UK farmers and contractors.


“The UK market is very important to both Grégoire Besson and Sulky Burel. We have excellent products and technology, and a growing and robust dealer network to service our customers.

Visitors to the Sulky-Burel stand at the Royal Highland Show will have the curved distribution pattern of a Sulky 24m spreader displayed before their feet to demonstrate the uniquely-curved pattern that the company’s GPS Econov spreaders employ to ensure even and consistent fertiliser distribution.

All fertiliser applicators, using centrifugal mechanisms, spread product in a crescent shaped curve, not a straight line. Sulky is the only manufacturer that manages this shape from its ISOBUS (QUARTZ 800) and non-ISOBUS (Matrix 840 GS) terminals. The smart technology, developed by Sulky, avoids over and under-application of fertiliser on headlands and in triangular shaped fields.

At the Royal Highland on stand F, Agricultural Avenue, this equipment can be seen on the Sulky X40+ ECONOV which has a working width that can be varied from 12 to 44m wide and options for payloads up to three tonnes. The Sulky team will explain the technology, and the spreading pattern will be marked out to show just how this works.

“We have used digital technology to enhance the accuracy of our spreading patterns,” says Robert Thurkettle, Managing Director of Sulky-Burel UK. “By working with the natural shape of spreading ‘crescents’ we offer farmers peace of mind through our ECONOV technology. Savings can be achieved in fertiliser costs, and with more even distribution across a field, areas of over/under application are removed and crop variability reduced.

“Quite simply, we are helping farmers strengthen how they manage their profitability.”

Also on show will be the DX20 spreader, able to spread 900-1,500 litres of fertiliser in widths from 9 to 19 metres.

When it comes to seed drilling, Sulky is exhibiting its XEOS EVO combination – a 3m drill capable of drilling 20 or 24 rows. With a range of options, XEOS drills can be combined a variety of cultivators and presses for putting seeds firmly in place at consistent depth.

Visitors can also see the 5m wide CULTILINE HRW in its ‘slim’ form, which means this 5m wide power harrow is quickly converted by hydraulics to just 2.5m wide for transport down narrow lanes.

Finally, looking to next winter, Sulky’s small salt and spreader the RS will be on show. Ideal for treating roads, tracks and yards in cold weather.
