Sulphur

I'm happy with the chart, just struggling to get a clear view on what you were applying, when and where you wanted the sulphur. No bother.

I can't really be any clearer. Before we used digestate we applied a N and S mix (something like a 22n 10so3) in 3 applications (n1, n2, n3). The timing of these depended on the crops but for example osr would get N1 in february and then we'd tend to repeat every 6 weeks or so until we had made the 3 passes. Historically those 3 passes would all be at the same rates.

Due to our location of being very close to a large food waste AD plant we can now use digestate as an option so what we have done is replaced n1 from above with digestate at around 25cbm/ha. This gives us 100kg N per ha but only 10kg so3 per ha.

Had we used 22n and 10so3 we would of put on around 40kg/ha so3 so at n1 timing we are 30kg/ha down. To make that back up we'd need to apply heavier rates of n22 10so3 at n2 and n3 applications but by doing this would push our total nitrogen over where we'd want to be for the whole n1, n2, n3.

So for us it would be easier to split the N and Sulphur applications away from each other then we could apply totals of each nutrient at the levels we want.

Much clearer thanks. Other N+S fertilisers of varying ratios are available that could rebalance your needs. Omex is just one example http://www.omex.co.uk/product/Nitroflo-Range/

I use Yara N32 + 9.4% SO3 but that doesn't really give osr enough S but is ok for cereals. No regular other products but I do need P, K and Mg so use sewage cake, Fibrophos and rotational kieserite to sort those.

The other issue with digestate is you can't go twice within a 12 month period if you've already maxed out at the first application so where we want to get to is digestate for 2/3 of our N requirement (170kg/ha ish) and then top that up with something like a straight cheap N20 home brewed perhaps. Thats the N done and all very easy assuming conditions suit the digestate application traffic.

Then we deal with sulphur as a separate entity and at whatever the best timing is.

Clearer still. Not much more I can add, other than to melt your own cheapo grade AS crystals to make your own home brew if you don't go down the route of a straight S product.

Avoid using elemental sulphur due to the process of it transforming into sulphate. Its highly acidifying so will deplete your Ca levels and carbonate reserves. Use a 3:1 N to S ration in your top dressing as either a liquid Urea AS blend or a compound solid e.g. Singletop. Start getting your sulphur on when the crop is coming out of dormancy at or around GS30 and drip it in with your N.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
