Any or many folk on here hav swans on their land over winter?, we r in an area known for them, even get a payment to stay outta fields from oct to March... but am sitting in the dark for the third time this week because of them hitting power lines, tonight's and last night's happening within 5mins of the exact same time, just as dusk is falling. Usually ends up a 2 hr outage unless they hit big lines.
Seem to be a savage number of them about this year, they seem to never outta the sky all times of the day.
Anybody else hav issue with them hitting power lines in their area?, gonna be a long winter if this happens every couple o nights

Feel your pain, used to happen really regularly. Now maybe 3/4 times a year. Our electric company have upgraded a lot of the lines so they take a hit. I've watched 5 swans explode as they hit the lines and the power goes off for a few seconds and back on. Sometimes they take out lower voltage farm lines which is a pain.

As it so happens, got some flying around and on my land for the first time, Yorkshire, east coast
5 of them :ROFLMAO:
But we have 1000s of pink footed geese, eating spring barley blown of by the 60mph gale we had a few weeks ago, Takeing off and landing in flocks all day, but they seem to go higher than the swans
I m enjoying all the fertility they leave behind

I've seen power lines with round tags hanging from them I presume this is to alert birds. Maybe ask they install them.

We have a couple of 4ac lakes here, with a few swans and lots of geese on. We've not lost many swans to the power lines, but geese seem particularly stupid when it comes to avoiding them. Leccy company got fed up with sorting the supply out after multiple fry ups, and even had the HV line brought down a couple of times, so they put bird deterrents on the line.
Bird strikes still happen occasionally, but a very rare occurrence now, rather than monthly.

Those bird deterrents do a good job I would urge the electricity suppliers to fit them.

Don't know if you have an equivalent to the RSPB over there, but once they get involved the utility firms really pull their fingers out - that's assuming you want the likes of the RSPB involved... 😐

These definitely work. We have approx 1000 migrant birds (geese & swans) land with us each year. Our AD plant was tortured during winter with birds hitting the line. We asked the network operator to fit deflectors and it has significantly reduced collisions and outages.

there is some sort of auto reconnect setup they can install to do this alright, wouldn't mind a flicker in power but having to wait 2 hrs for a man to go and flick a switch somewhere ain't much fun.
They put the deterrents up a few years back apparently... about 2/3 miles further up the river, now the birds hav all shown up in this area, dunno if it's a natural migration down the river by them or if they are avoiding the deterrents!!
Storm kept them at bay last night at least!
