Switching from bt

Keep getting pestered by a sales rep from xln telecoms trying to get me to switch from bt. Are they any good?
Currently with by and the saving would be about £850 over 2 years.
If I move from bt will I be able to keep my bt connect email address? The rep says yes but he would wouldn't he.

Can I ask why are you wedded to your BT connect email address?

You could get a free gmail account or even go semi professional and buy your own domain name for a tenner and have someone like Zoho host your email for free.

I'm a complete techniphobe.
Can just about turn computer on.
All I know is that it would be a pain to have to change address. I suppose I could email to to all contacts my new address.
I think I've a gmail account set up with my phone .
I tend to have to get a youngster to set me things up.
Because I'm not on it every day I tend to forget how to do everything.

Everyone says " you should stick with bt .If there's a problem they will sort it quicker than having another provider involved."
The thought being that bt and openreach will work together better than xln and openreach who will simply blame each other.

BT are not very good and the others are worse.
Salesmen will tell you anything and it rarely turns out to be true, especially predicted savings.
Once signed up you will discover the service isn't what they claimed and customer service does not exist.
Most farms are relatively remote from the exchange and are prone to more issues due to line damage, poor maintenance etc leading to above average line faults. BT are still going to be the ones to fix it and it "seems" to me they are less favourable to non BT customers.

That is exactly my thinking.
Bt can afford to be more expensive because they know customers are fearful of changing.

That is why I stick with them. Lots of faults on the lines here. To give BT their due I have had issues with 1 internet connection recently and Bt Business have been very helpful and we have the problem sort of sorted.

I thought about switching from bt to sse after reading the
letter from bt saying they would be putting the prices up. Being cautious I decided to ring bt and make sure there wouldn't be any penalty for switching mid contract. The girl I was speaking to offered to see if they could come in any cheaper (we pay £41 / month currently), I said she could check but I was quite determined to change. The first offer was £36 / month, I said no. She went away and came back with £29 and a free upgrade to fibre. I said I'd think about it. I rang sse and their offer was £28 but I'd have to shell out £55 in the first place. Both were for 3 years and seeing that I wasn't going to save anything I rang bt and said I'd accept their offer of £29 / month. Obviously it pays to ring them and threaten to leave!

I have had 3 engineers (well, 4 as two turned up together...) from Openretch in the last two weeks to try and find a fault. No fault found, so Plusnet are talking about sending another engineer...
Broadband running at 0.4mg and they say it is acceptable. Plusnet are part of BT.

They'll try to say that the minimum guaranteed speed on your contract is not the speed that you get when you run the usual download tests but the access line speed that your hub syncs to which is always higher. I raised this with Offcom to get them to force providers to state clearly what they mean by minimum guaranteed speed. Their response wasn't impressive!

I’m (currently) on BT for phone line and have been with Plusnet for broadband for many years. In the event of a fault, both here and back home in Glos), Plusnet have always been far better to deal with, and seemingly far better than BT at dealing with Openreach.

BT broadband have consistently rated terribly for customer service, and their phone service is little better IME. Perhaps still a hang up from the public sector structure of many years ago?

I keep meaning to change the phone line over, as it does little more than provide a connection for the broadband service these days.

I have an indie for both the phone line and bb. He sees the Openreach system data and direct contact with their team. Recently had a switchover to fttc which went w4nky so he sent a lad over to reconfigure the router and check for settings, no go so left a 4g router to keep us going(all foc). Managed to get Openreach to port us to a closer cabinet (1100m instead of 2600m) and hopefully after the engineers have done their stuff we’ll be looking at 30meg plus.

Don’t dismiss the independent guys. Does our mobiles too.

There is no reason I would use any other email account provider than gmail or hotmail really. I categorically would not use BT or any similar organisation to host my emails given the recent spate of big organisations who demonstrate they cannot handle personal data or basic digital security.

You would be hard-pressed to convince me to pay for third party email server hosting, either. I would want to see their track record on it myself. For a modest organisation, setting up your own one is probably the better option.

For the record, BT have been providing our landline/broad band for the last 18 months and I am very pleased with reliability and speed here.

I've decided to stick with bt. They gave me a much better deal once I told them I was going to leave to a cheaper provider. I don't tend to send any personal details via email.
And if anyone wants to hack into the crap that gets sent to me they are welcome to it.

A friend has switched from B.T. to Vodafone broadband because he said its a lot cheaper. I haven't asked him yet how he gets on with it but out of curiosity I did Google "Vodafone broadband reviews " and read lots of horror stories. I think I will stick with B.T....
