T7.200 gearbox problems

Just reversing out the shed with our T7.200 and suddenly the gearbox jams up like the brakes are on. Drives forward in a fashion but making some awful expensive money noises.. The tractor has a range command transmission and has done a very modest 2000 hours... (not very impressed).. We have other range commands done up to 17000 hours in TM's completely untouched, apart from the odd synchro and damper plate drives... Bad luck here, or are these newer models fitted with cheaper poorer quality bearings I wonder??..

Into the workshop with it and off with the cab. We split between gearbox and back end and start taking it apart. Soon find the fault, a bearing has completely collapsed on the bottom shaft and caused damage to the two splined shafts it supports and connects with, but fortunately no gears damaged. Complete strip down of the full transmission necessary, so out with the gearbox and completely dismantle. I had to make a couple of specialist tools to compress the clutch packs whilst inside the transmission housing to assist in their removal...

Parts needed to fix are £3000 from CNH, or alternatively, £600 from a supplier in Ireland who tell me their parts are allegedly from the same manufacturer as genuine CNH, or £300 from same firm but from a burnt out tractor, along with a £26.00 quality bearing and our own labour cost.. I think we will also change the rest of the bearings too as there appears to be no brand name visible on them and I have the fear of future failure!... Reassembly soon...

Fair play for tackling such a job.
We recently had a bearing go on a 7210 power command with 4k hours and done 13k of damage to the gears, a cheap bearing was to blame.

Saving your self a fortune doing that yourself, i dread to think what a maindealer would charge for that job.

We're fortunate we can carry out all our repairs here so long as it doesn't involve a laptop. I worked for Ford and MF dealers in my younger days, and Andy who's with us was also MF trained too. The knowledge learnt over the past 40 years and the ability to repair our kit has been invaluable.

Sadly yes.. I've seen many come and go in our job over the years... Buy a tractor, slash the rate, a few expensive repairs and gone!.. Often in just a few years.

Well done that man!!! (y)(y)
I've never been in a TM box yet, Is that fairly similar??

See there is a bit of blue on that clutch pack housing, its had a bit of heat in there for sure.
Dammed annoying that a crappy bearing causes all that work, The parts from your Irish supplier seem to be genuine to me, that would be the way to go I reckon.
More pics of the reassembly please!!!:cool:

13k main dealer ?
Yes main dealer. It did alot of damage to alot of cogs and shafts which had to be replaced.
I believe the tms were pretty bomb proof for gearboxes but they use cheap bearings in the t7's. Looking into it its quite common and some dealers even carry a recon box on the shelf ready to go!

Will new Holland not contribute to cost of repair? How old is tractor? I know the savings from sourcing the parts from elsewhere will cover any contribution.

I think 5 years was cut off point when clutch packs went on our 7050.

Was about 7k to do all clutch packs on our tractor. 13k does seem excessive. You'd get a vario exchange unit for that.

Given that the "genuine" bearing that caused the issue failed unacceptably quickly would it be worth replacing all of the bearings with top quality ones instead whilst rebuilding? The cost difference would be small.

Credit to you for doing the job yourself.

I'd say CNH have some explaining to do
