Tachograph rules

We are just about to get a vw transporter and it will be towing non agricultural goods all over the country. They are our own products that we shall be delivering and we do charge to deliver them, so I am pretty sure that I will need a tachograph and O licence.
My main questions are, when a tachograph is fitted presumably you still only need B + E licence?
If tachograph is fitted do you still need to use it when not towing?

Most people in the machinery trade use tachograph on the day of trailer use & keep a log on days when not towing. Make sure your trailer is plated to the towing capacity of your tow vehicle as well.

you don't need the o license if it not hire and reward ,,, if you follow to the letter of the law I belive you cant jump in and out of the European driving rules if you go in them at any time in that week ie if you use tacho on the Monday you have to stay on using a tacho all week even without trailer ,,,,, its not easy at this level so many cross over grey areas its a night mare

We are delivering our own products, racing rowing boats, to our customers. We charge for delivery so hire and reward? This would be restricted licence? Can be long trips but majority only up to a couple of hours away. I don’t do many trips so would be a right pain if had to use tacho every time I jumped in to go down the road a few miles. If not towing for a whole week do you just not use tacho, how do you account for those miles? We’ve had doublecabs previously so not had to think about it before

can you not tow with a 4x4 dual purpose vehicle it would be a lot simpler still need to use the taco but no o licence

We can put singles and pairs on the roof rack but foursand eights(split in half) have to be transported on a trailer, fours are up to 13.6m long! They go on top of trailer and over hang towing vehicle. Very light though, fully loaded trailer about a tonne total

Only reason I suggested pickup was it avoids operators license, tacho, higher speed, no b+e license requirement (for younger drivers). This for example has a 16ft body. Edit...no good for 13.6m though

This is easy to solve then.

You need to get your towing vehicle and trailer to stay under 3500kgs gross.

No need for a tacho or anything else.

Plate trailer to a tonne max or similar and get a vehicle that's plated to no more than 2500

Unfortunately need more than 3500kg gross, sometimes we do tow a bigger boat trailer which could run to 1.5-2 t, also do boat racking and tow flat bed with quite a bit of steelwork in. We probably should have been running a tachograph with the double cab...

Two weeks actually. Means you must have 1 x 24 hr "rest" and 1 x 45 hr "rest" in that fortnight, and not work (any type of work for pay or reward, not just driving) for more than 60 hours in any week. And that's just the main rules.

Thought you could only do 48 hours a week?
The rules there are too complicated for me, I can barely cope with NZ rules and logbooks:eek:
