if a double cab is in a taxation class of lcv is it still a daul purpose ,,, and don't some weigh more than the limit anyway ??
"dual-purpose vehicle
a vehicle constructed or adapted for the carriage both of passengers and of goods or burden of any description, being a vehicle of which the unladen weight does not exceed 2040 kg"
If it was "lcv" it probably weighs more than that

I must say if they started applying tachograph rules to fast tractors it would be carnage as it limits the hours of non driving work as well. It means I won't be able to drive 3 hrs work 6 then drive another 3 home
A farming forum is probably not the best place to ask advice on road rules and regulations, most farmers are quite content running over weight, over-size or over speed vehicles of some sort. :D
The rules and regs are all on the ".gov.uk" websites and they are the rules that matter, might take a bit of reading to find the info you are looking for.

I know what a "dual purpose vehicle" is but it's not "farmer" specific
Your post number 24 is quite confusing as you mention "trailer at the time is over 3500kg" which is a whole different issue, re towing hitch, brakes etc etc
You've got me confused now. You can always look up the rules yourself

It is NOT illegal to tow a 3500kg rated trailer with a vehicle with a 3000kg rating as long as the trailer isn't weighing more than 3000kg at the time

It is probable that even with a dual purpose vehicle you would not be exempt from tacho for boats etc whereas a farmer with own goods within 100km is not subject to tacho rules

It is not legal to tow a 3500kg rated trailer with Bradley / Knott type hitch at over 3500kg all up weight even if you towed it with a tractor etc

See the last photo. Dual Purpose is not confined to farmers BUT you will be very restricted on what you can do without requiring a tacho

Maybe I should just ignore these threads that pop up from time to time

You haven't answered my question about the dual purpose vehicle being "farmer" specific
It was you that mentioned trailer being over 3500kg in your post

It is my understanding that there are very restricted occasions where even a dual purpose vehicle is exempted from tacho

The only way you can guarantee not infringing tacho rules is actually to have towing vehicle, trailer and load under 3500kg

Nope, It strikes me you get a different answer from each person you ask.
Hence why I think the farming community gets cut a lot of slack and it will be the few that push the bounds and ruin it for everyone

Kids on phones and speeding through villages on tractors

Folks pulling absolutely unroadworthy trailers on the roads, often unlit

Folks flouting the ag registered quad bike rules

Gross overloading of trailers and carting massive distances

These threads never enlighten me to what the rules are.
That's because people who haven't got a clue what they are talking about post as if they know the rules. Anyone posting on these types of threads should include a link to the regulations or paste in the relevant section

I was pulled in at a ministry check point a few years back and told that I could not pull an empty trailer without a techo even though I was under 3.5 ton. The inspector was very disappointed when I showed him my van plate which only gave me a maximum mass of 3.5 ton.
If you can find a car or van plated at or below 3.5 ton you can pull any trailer you like as long as your gross weight is under the vehicles maximum plated weight. If you could use a light weight pole trailer you should be good to carry 1.5 ton legally as long as its not over length.

you don't need the o license if it not hire and reward ,,, if you follow to the letter of the law I belive you cant jump in and out of the European driving rules if you go in them at any time in that week ie if you use tacho on the Monday you have to stay on using a tacho all week even without trailer ,,,,, its not easy at this level so many cross over grey areas its a night mare
Can’t see why you need to put card in when not towing? Otherwise you will have to have rests at the given times etc even though you haven’t got a trailer on.
