Tanker drivers

What a lot of people don't understand about what is going on in the haulage industry atm.. is that there is a major power grab from the supermarkets and large retailers.
The sub's pulling trailers are getting their rates pushed down not up, they can't compete anymore with the likes of Tesco's lorry driver wages and sign on driver bonus, so ultimately they are going to start quitting.
Tesco can go and rent a new lorry and fridge for £500 per week then add a driver at £800 and they are in complete control and have all the power of their own haulage.

I'm not saying that lorry drivers don't deserve more money but there will be implications for us all, especially farmers like you and me.

I’m tempted to go drive a tanker of a evening if our lot get short, getting paid to pick my milk up seems ideal 🤣

Start your own fleet😁

Quarry down the road for me were advertising for machine operators this spring.

£1200 a week for a 4 day week but was 12 hour days mind.

How long can us farmers keep indirectly working for less than a proper wage?

Given where the costs are going, 29p a litre doesn't cut it.

Yes. Salary in the low to mid 30s plus a house with council tax and most bills gives a 50k package.
but farming is projected as a low intellectual requirement career, with long hours, heavy manual work, and poorly paid industry, the only part of that, which is true, is the long hours.
The actual truth is, we are a vibrant, forward looking industry, with high tech equipment, cutting edge gear etc, just a great pity schools don't push the right kids, toward ag. 50k, including a house, is a very respectable salary, mostly with an enjoyable trade, vv a factory works floor, at min wage.

I did like the bit on the Clarkson farm programe. Local boy Kaleb was explaining the technology behind the tramlining control system on the drill.
Clarkson, seen everything, done everything, hadn`t a clue what he was on about

I think the haulage industry is asking the same question same as dairy farmers.
It shouldn't be a case of how much do I have to pay you for you to stay doing your current job.
The question should be how can I make your current job work as well as possible for you.
Perhaps some drivers are happy to do more weekends.
Perhaps 3 shifts a day may be better. 4 day week in some pay rather than 25% pay rise.
If your paying 2000 a week on drivers and 500 on the lorry maximising the drivers makes far more sense than making the lorry work flat out.
