I have a ted20 it died on me a couple of weeks ago someone told me needed new coil so baught a new coil still wouldn't start then put a new electronic distributor on still won't start I've checked the output on the coil it doesn't seem to produce a spark I have 12v going to coil I'm baffled supposed to be going to a show on Saturday but dosent look like it will make it any ideas

can u test if there is a spark on a plug while u crank over the engine

balance a removed plug that is touching the chasie ( to earth it ) if u hold the plug to check for spark be careful as the spark belt will hurt (y)(y)

a set of spark plug tester things are very useful for this sort of thing

do u have ,,....
fuel going in petrol
clean plugs
a good spark

most prob something and nowt
good luck tom

Good fuel in tank just don't have a spark from coil to distributor or from spark plugs I've fitted new coil and distributor still no spark

With it switched on, hold the small wire that was going from the coil to the bottom of the distributor (points) to a shiny steel part. In other words earth the coil, when you disconnect from earth you should have a spark out of the coil? Test by placing a high tension lead from the coil to clean steel work, leave an air gap so you can see the spark or use a spark plug.

If nothing check for battery voltage (probably 12volts) on the other side of the coil with a biggish test bulb?

I've got 12 volts to coil and the small wire coming from coil does spark. But getting nothing from the ht lead from top of coil fitted new leads new coil but nothing

Just study things a bit .................
When you disconnect the earth wire from the coil you should have a spark out of the HT on the coil?
Try the old coil across a battery before fitting again?
Unlikely you have two dud coils, but you never know ..............

- on coil going to points + on coil going to 12Volts?
To be honest it shouldn't matter what way its wired.

You might have 12volts on a meter with nothing connected, so use a bulb to be sure .........

I used a meter on both coils and both read just over 10.000 omes which is correct according to manufacturers I don't understand what you mean about the earth from coil?

Ok so the positive on the battery is connected to the chassis, so positive earth.
I'm concerned that the ignition switch may well be faulty, so dont go on having 12Volts with nothing connected but the voltmeter. Connect a bulb (21watt at least), so that you know the circuit can power the coil.

One lead of the bulb to the wire coming from ignition switch and the other wire on the bulb to the chassis, it should light up?

Better still connect a coil up to a battery before you connect it to the tractor, see it making a spark.

Will check with the bulb in morning but sure the switch is fine as getting 12 volts from it and will need to check with supplier about suitability for positive earth. Would that cause the coil to not spark from ht lead out the top of coil?

"Would that cause the coil to not spark from ht lead out the top of coil"

Cranking over trying for a start:
If you are using the electronic module to switch the coil off to generate the spark, the answer to your question is, yes.

Testing:
If you are manually connecting the coil to the chassis as I described in my first post to test. The answer to your question is no, because the electronic module will have no control over the coil, because its not connected to it.

I have never came across a positive earth electronic ignition module, before.

I'd get my ducks in a row as far as polarity goes. Negative Earth at battery would surely help with electronic ignition. I'd be having a good look at the module data sheet regarding connections polarity. I dare say the coil works either way round but I'd be surprised if the electronic ignition unit could cope with reverse polarity. It's a transisitor at heart, which is just a switchable diode. Won't pass any current in reverse.

And you cant convert to negative earth without polarizing the dynamo.

But the module will need help/replacement if intended for negative earth, but has been connected positive earth.
