Telephone - electric fence interference.

I expect it's been covered here somewhere, but whats the most likely cause?

I've found a couple faults, each drawing 3-4amps. but I've another fault away at the furthest end of the farm, but I can hear the pulse on the fences leading out from the farm. how should that be? I suspect that's how it's getting into the phone line.

is it likely that our 1980s buried scrap metal earth has dissolved beyond function?

I’m not sure you’ll stop it entirely what ever you do. Got out on a damp night and look and listen, if it’s polywire there might be a few arcs within the wire itself.

only other idea, and I don’t know if I’m way off the mark, could be that if you’re running two strands it might worth running a loop rather than both together. I.e. top away and bottom coming back. Perhaps it will counter any interference itself. That worked here but might have been to do with new wire being used more than anything.

a few things could be going on
some times a multi wire fence will build up on dead wires if running the same way earth out the strainer posts at tie off ends might kill off a build up
improve earth near unit and in some cases run a earth on to some fence lines to have a bigger earth area
most times it wires running a bit of distance beside phone lines
it may not be your fence doing it seen that happen before in some areas turn off your unit and see if the interference is still there
any diffrent on a damp day or after a dry spell
if worse during damp insulators playing up if worst during dry. earth playing up

Is it definitely your fencer? Have you tried turning off your fencer to check?
We had an issue that was messing our connection. Checked our fence and neighbours to no avail, had bt out and they found the "culprit" miles away.

yeah it's definitely us, it appears by aren't so helpful this time. I thought I heard a slight tick on our line but it's a farm a couple miles away that's hearing it worst, he's had folk hang up on him it's that bad. apparently it's because he's the end of the line he's hearing it worst. he phoned me while I was standing next to the box and I switched it off and it went away. our main line goes under the road where the phone line is buried so I'm guessing that's how it's getting I to it.

can you turn off the bit under the road or easy to replace to check that it's there
it might be on the end of the line before it crosses
sounds strange but had one area could not find a fault for ages they were the fold over insulators stapled to wooden posts alot of them had burn marks on them
hard to track down needs wet days and a great earth volt tested could not show it up but. radio would pick it up hear the click on that
ended up replacing them all

On a mains set up near the buildings?

Perhaps its The main earth is too close to other earth(s) for the electric supply ? That's what I always thought anyway but I'm no electrician

Could be One good reason for modern battery set ups.

I am currently having a problem with ticking on my traditional landline. This certainly is not the first time. Previous times I was lucky enough to get AT&T out to help me get the electric fence problems solved. The fault fences have been one at the end of my road and the other is 1 and 1/2 miles from my home location. This time it is not good at all. I have proven several times that indeed my long distance neighbor is at fault. His fences are a mess, he tries to act like he is cooperating with me but he isn't. He says Phone Company is calling and leaving him messages but he will not return their call. If the phone company can't catch him at home, then we are out of luck. It is now going on four weeks that I have not been able to use my telephone (at $94 a month and due again). The ticking is a loud ear piercing sound that hurts my ears. My ears are sensitive to sounds due to cell phone damage. That’s one reason I went back to a POTS line. I went to see him again today with my portable am radio on with the antenna up. I was ready to help him track the problem down but he was busy, told me in two or three days he will call me. The radio is good to find the fence but not the problem area, clicking was everywhere which is normal because it's electrical pulses. When I go back we will be just listening for the sound coming from underground and maybe it will lead to the source. Your neighbors and the Phone Company NEED you to work with them. This causes a lot of anxiety, be glad it's not you.

Could you use one of these to help find the fault?

Thank you, it would be worth trying but I would not want to be the one to pay for it.

I am trying to get AT&T to put me on a phone line that comes from the other direction on my road which my next door neighbor is on, she never has any problems. Since the FCC has now said that all state's telephone companies no longer have to provide Traditional landline telephone services, AT&T is going to stop providing the service but has not set a date yet, I will be really lucky if they do that for me in the mean time. I have read that AT&T will be pulling up all the old telephone lines and laying fiber optic cable. I have been wondering if AT&T realizes they will no longer be a utility. The only utilities left will be power, water, and gas. This means AT&T will not be able to use the utility right a way to run their cables. It will be their responsibility to get permission from the land owners to bury their cable lines or go overhead on the power lines. AT&T will be no different than any cable company, any internet company or any cell phone company. I personally did not let Spectrum go over head but let they go underground at my last home. AT&T will have a lot of unhappy customers that may not give them permission. The traditional landline service may not be the newest technology but it is the best and the most reliable telephone service invented.
