Telephone VAT fraud attempted

Had a very convincing gent with a very thick estuarine accent on the phone. Claimed I owed two and a half grand in VAT, odd as I only ever reclaim VAT. He was very well rehearsed and quickly upped the ante to the point that he had enforcement officers with police support and a high court writ 34 minutes away.
Had I not been dealing with a very anxious stressed autistic teenager I could have had some fun with this devious b stard , however he had me on the run for a while and I can see how he might just have got his cash ......
Beware.... reported it and was told I was the fifth that call handler had heard today.

If it were the case, you would find that they do not phone up first!, walk-in possession order and 7 days to pay, I am told.

Sorry “estuarine English” .... south eastern London type accent... he was quite distinctive, I only mentioned it in case someone else had spoken to the scum bag.... it was very distinct.

There's a programme about telephone scams on Channel 5 at the moment (How to Stop Your Nuisance Calls). It began at 8pm, if anyone is interested.

I had the HMRC tax scam call around a fortnight ago, and I reported it to the real HMRC right away.

Had an email from 'tv licencing authority' or similar today.
Looked very official. My bank had rejected the direct debit claim and I needed to click the link to pay and maintain my licence.
Only thing is we have no tv and haven't for 30 years!

Starts fresh but gets saltier toward the end of the conversation.

I've been told so many times that I've been involved in a serious accident that I feel I should have an entry in the Guiness Book of Records as the great survivor! Had one from a bank a couple of weeks ago about a cheque going out of my account to a foreign country. I did report it to my bank but they weren't very interested. I suppose they have so many... and the number of long lost relatives .. usually in Africa .. on their death bed wanting to give me thousands of dollars before they die is quite entertaining!!

Next time I have a phone call asking about the serious accident I've been involved in, I thought I would agree with them and describe the (fictional!) incident and ask if that's the one they are referring to... got to have a bit of fun sometimes?!..... Anybody got any really inventive scenarios I could use?!!!

I usually tag along with them, saying it was very bad, not my fault and that I was in hospital for several days. They usually go on to ask what injuries I had, to which I reply that that were multiple, and that after a week in hospital I died from them. There is often quite a long pause before they put the phone down on me.

If it’s a woman ask her what colour her underwear is at the moment

.....just be sure it’s a scam!
