Thame sheep sale

A lot of sheep not sold. Folk couldn't take the bids. Beltex x sheep sold well at the start, around £145 - £180 I'd say, strong texel x shearlings would be £120 - £180. A lot of sheep not getting to £120 and going home. We bought some strong Cheviot mule shearlings and av. £120. Same sheep would have been £150 +- last year at longtown. Older ewes were from £70 - £110. A lot of big sheep around £100. Didn't really see many lambs sold but a friend had 400 texel gimmer lambs between £70 and £100.

Did you see the Park cheviots sold ? Not my type of cheviots but made bloody stupid money last time I was there .

Yes, he had a good trade with his half breds/texel x/cheviots. From memory, they were all around £160 - £180. We went with the intention of buying a few park types, but when we got there, they put us off them. Big lazy looking things. Prefer the look of the hill type ewe.

I agree , they were monsters of things last year too, give me a Lairg ewe any day.

Quite a lot of of texel x sorts also created an overkill of them, also big run that got run straight through when top pens never sold knocked the stuffing out of the sale for a while. Always the case @thame but never ceases to amaze me the tiny % of shearlings that have lambed, ok bought 25/30 cheaper, but gain all of that back by selling a sheep with a bag, plus if done right a lamb at50 to 70, yes will have a few extra losses and costs, but not over 50 quids worth, well certainly not in this area

This was definitely the case, a big run of texel x Cheviot mule shearlings that didn't get going and there were some bargains to be had from there on in. I bought some sheep of your sister, I'm sure she'll give me my luck when I see you at longtown!!! (Joking!)

I beg to differ.
I would have thought £15 to £20 pounds back wouldn't be far off the mark. But that doesn't make them cheap !
General lack of grass and fodder, money seems tight and the uncertainty over Brexit. I thought they were a dam good trade under the circumstances. I bet the auctioneers would have snapped your arm off for that trade a week ago !

How many times do you hear of folks running dry ewes because they don’t want the work of lambing? Plenty of threads about it on here over the years, as well as countless arable farms that think they can get money for nothing.

Some of the shearlings we bought yesterday at £120 would have cost £100+ a year ago as lambs. I suppose next year might be different if they can buy lambs at £80 and get £140 or £150 for them.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
