What’s rubbish? Of course there’s a price beyond which it becomes difficult to sell any product. Just look at how fertiliser sales fell off a cliff when the price went through the roof. He didn’t say that the price had been reached only that it becomes harder to shift as it gets dearer which I would think is only common sense.
Fert went from £270 ton to £700 ton literally overnight..

For cattle to have done the same they would need to be averaging £10 kilo deadweight now!

So you cannot compare Fert with cattle prices ref demand!

Farmers are the only business people that argue/ try to justify low prices for their own products, that needs to stop as its utter madness !

The reason beef/lamb prices have jumped is due to lack of supply, if they wont pay more for our cattle/lambs then where the hell are they going to get the beef/lamb they need to source to supply their customers?? or are everyone going to turn veggie if farmers get a sensible price for their cattle/lambs?

I think the problem is that beef and lamb have been in a time warp price wise from the late 80’s until sometime around 2010 and there’s a lot of catching up to do from that period of stagnation
This makes them believe they are paying too much in reality it’s not too dear we are still only in the catch-up phase

Take subs out and beef needs to be £5.85 kilo to cover costs

And lamb would need to be £8.50+ a kilo to cover costs and allow a small profit margin.

Local machinery dealer put out a price list for telehandlers the other day, list price is now £122,000 so say 100,000k on farm price!

That shows why beef/lamb prices will have to go one way and that is upwards!

Or people got to prioritise food again. .
People got to eat something.
And to to continue to be able to eat they will have to pay what it cost to produce.

There will be price resistance to beef if it goes up in price though there is with everything whenever it goes up in price. But people will get used to it they always do. They either get used to it or do without for a bit. Then they miss it and come back to it.
Everything has gone up in price last few years so it's not like they won't expect it.

Selling to butchers and wholesalers gives you an indication of the effect of price rises.
Most retailers don't like having to change prices very often.
It is interesting that we have kept the lamb price the same for the last 8 months only having increased the price by 80p per kg from this month and have said we hope to keep this the same until Easter.

This always triggers them calling other suppliers and/or reducing orders. Interesting that one came back and said he could get lambs for £6.95 per kg. I suggested that would be difficult as the dead price is now around £6.85 to the producer.
It will be interesting to see if he orders this week.

The laws of supply and demand are working at the moment and providing cheap imports don't suddenly arrive then these higher prices will remain.

The choice of red meat on offer there lately has been awful unless you want chicken every sunday!

Morrisons beef has been utter shite for a long time. Won't be long before the whole thing is wound up I wouldn't have thought, petrol stations have gone now haven't they?! Abattoirs soon be ear marked.

The shorthorn beef is always good but there’s never any of it. Don’t bother now as they closed the store in Northallerton, not driving 20 miles to find it’s sold out
