The cost of keeping sheep.

Anyone willing to share. How much do you work out it will cost to keep 1 ewe a year. How much profit do you expect (if any) after you have kept a ewe and she has given you a lamb on what ever system you work weather it be hill sheep or low ground sheep. Ideally to include cost of renting ground and no subsidies. Thanks.

First thing is I don't know the answers to all your questions even though I should but to get things rolling I will say I work on a ewe costing me £17 a year in forage. That is 50p a week for 5 months of turnips and 25p a week for 7 months of grass.

I make a living.The sheep are on rotational grass on an arable farm.The profit comes from increased grain sales.In theory!

Depending on how much you pay yourself and how much rent you pay, roughly between £90 and £100 per ewe per year.

Nor do I...

It's easier when you have nearly zero overheads.

Besides that's what it costs to keep a ewe for a year, not how much it costs to get a lamb to slaughter.

so you haven't answered the question in the first post

I thought that was the question actually, but I'd expect the first lamb of a pair to give me about £20 profit and the second to give £60. Assuming £65 average per lamb.

So my best ewes give me approximately £85 profit (be better this year though as prices are good).

Obviously I don't average 200% sold. Don't even scan at that.
