Try having a springer. Ours works on the principle 'if it don't move, eat it. If it does move, stop it moving, then eat it.'When I walk them my son's lab picks volunteer turnips and then eats them. My two think she's a little odd.

Update: all lumps were harmless fatty lumps and he’s feeling a lot better. Makes me wince watching him tug at the stitches though
