The IH / Case Thread

Er, I’m sorry to say I don’t know the answer to those questions.
The main reason I bought it was because it used to belong to my dad, it was his scrapper tractor when he had pigs ( back in the late 70s) then i foolishly sold it back in the late 90s. Finally got the chance to buy it back for me and my kids to smarten up and have some fun with.
So any idea how I can find out it’s age? Didn’t have a log book when I sold it years ago, don’t imagine it’s possible to get one now?

Serial number plate on bellhousing forward of brake pedals, IIRC they started at 501. If you’re not on it join the IH 3 and 4 cyl group on Facebook. If you have a registration but no log book or need a registration you can join the UK Case club for £10 and they will assist with dating the tractor and getting an age related registration or try to resurrect the original one.

My 5140 , owned for 10 years now, mostly hitched into the postdriver, will be parked up over winter to sort the tinwork out on her,

Thanks, will have a look at that.

Does anyone know where the brake balancing valve is on a 685 with the XL cab? I'm trying to find out why i have air bubbles in the bleed lines and seals in the brake balancing valve were suggested. Both brake pedals almost to the floor and bleeding only helps for a few months. Both pedal master cylinders are dry. Thanks

It is the part in middle of the 2 master cylinders. Do you know if the reservoir has continually got full oil level? Are you nipping off the return pipe from res when bleeding?

The outflow pipe from the reservoir has a steel pipe inserted in it to maintain a high level of oil in the reservoir. This can slip down and give your symptoms.
The other likely culprit is a worn o ring on one or both of the brake pistons. Replacing these entails removing the final drives which needs a bit of thought due to the weight of them, but is otherwise straightforward and pretty cheap.
I have never had problems with the master cylinders or balancing valve and if they are dry they should hopefully be ok.

What are the widest tyres you can replace 13.6x38 s with. or is it best to swap wheels to 16.9x34 s??
Don't think there's anything you can do without swapping wheels. 16.9r34, 480/70r34 or 540/65r34 are the same height, or step up a size to 18.4r34, 520/70r34 or 600/65r34, although these will need a change of fronts on a 4wd. All depends on how wide you need and how much you want to spend.

was hoping just to go slightly wider than 13.6 on the 38r rims?? No options for that then?? Do the 34" wheels off a 895 fit a 856??
I'm not aware of any low profile equivalent to a 13.6 and any other 38 is going to be too wide for your rims as well as a lot taller.
895 rims won't fit an 856, 844 rims will.

Thanks Essex Pete and Andy Nash - The two master cylinders on mine are different and the reservoir has all the pipes coming in to the bottom. I will check under the dash to see if there's a balance valve hiding in there - but i think all the pipes from the master cylinders are in the engine compartment on the XL cab versions then go down under the cab on their way to the back end. Yes i've nipped off the return pipe from the reservoir - and i've also removed the orifice and filter from the oil cooler return pipe that feeds the reservoir. Will pull off the reservoir next and have a look at the steel pipe in it. I read that you can fill up a clear pipe with hytran and attach to each of the bleed nipples and see if the level goes down overnight to test if brake piston o-rings are leaking. Has anyone tried that?

Slow hydraulics on 895XL
I have owned a 895xl for a few years. Bought when desperate but outwardly in good condition and has been reasonably good but will never be my favourite tractor to operate.
Hydraulics have always been very slow. Fitted a new hydraulic pump and now have excellent steering even at idle revs but have to rev hard to get movement/pressure on loader, links arms, spools etc.
I note there is a buzzing noise from the valve chest which stops as soon as I move the steering wheel even a fraction. I’m thinking there is a relief valve problem which is stopping the flow getting to everything other than steering.
has anyone had similar problems or can offer advice? Most grateful for any thoughts!

I will be interested as well. Our 895 never been quick either. Can't imagine using it as a loader. Our one will barely lift at tick over. Arms stay up quite well when switched off and steering not bad even at low revs. I guess we are talking about a tractor designed 50 years ago.

It’s a fairly puny hydraulic pump and I’m told you shouldn’t expect great loader performance but my father has a similar 885XL and his loader is far better. I’m sure there is something amiss in the valve chest but the workshop manual doesn’t give me much to go on.
