The war in Ukraine...

I just don't see why it was ever worth risking a Nuclear war just to get rid of one man and maybe his hangers on.

IMHO it's already way past worthwhile .. I bet £Trillions will be spent shoring up military and paying extra for energy. What a waste of lives and money.

Best Post yet. The current situation shows how useless our leaders are at diplomacy. Sometimes you have to yield a little to gain a lot....

Ten years time, Germany will be the leading European military power, based on it‘s new commitment to spending on defence.
Could anybody have foreseen that a week ago?

Anyone think Putin is smart?

Donald Trump does

Again. I've never understood these kind of statements.

I'm not a leader of a country and most people in the world are not either.

Therefore I am not as smart as these people - I cannot even earn the money to try. So yes, all leaders of all countries are smart, it goes without saying.

I think most people expected him to sweep the Ukrainians out of the way and take Kiev in a couple of days. And there would be no threat from a putin on the back foot, now that's its possible that he might actually lose if he hasn't already it makes this game so much more risky. We are hoping that someone in russia will stop him but theres no guarantee of that.

You can't really say the Russians have lost after 1 week of combat. Its the largest country in Europe. Took the yanks a month to take Iraq and most of them rolled over for them.

Putin has a game plan, otherwise he wouldn't have gone into Ukraine.

That probably includes a get out of jail free card.

They probably will claim some sort of victory but taking and controlling the whole country looks a mile off at this point.

Russia has said a few times it doesn't want to occupy ukraine, I'm wondering if he can snatch a few people from his hit list and claim to have destroyed the Ukraine army will he just walk out and leave the place a mess. Keep Donbas and luhansk?

Yeh. Almost impossible to control it I'd say. Like Vietnam. Who knows, the Russians have a plan and we'll never be privy to it. It's the escalation from the West that's worrying me now tbh. One wrong move by a NATO jet in the black sea, or a captured American special forces operative (who's somehow wandered into Ukraine) and boom you've got ww3.

If the West had persuaded Ukraine to allow the Donbass regions to become independent we might not be in this mess. The long game with Putin is best played when he remains in his cage. Wait it out until he's replaced. Now we're playing fast and loose with a man who's had years to plan multiple options.

We're playing right into the East vs West playbook. Be easier to coerce China, Iran etc. now that we're actively aiding a nation against Russia. The sport and performing arts stuff is way too far. These areas of society are meant to build bridges and bring nations together, instead we've burnt them all down.

They said they wouldn't invade either .. I thought they'd just manipulate commodity prices and string the EU out - literally commodity blackmail.

You cannot keep Ukraine if the people living there don't want it - it becomes guerilla warfare with continuous losses. Crimea probably wants Russia and maybe the two districts.

Kyiv .. easy way out would be to conquer, evacuate refuges to the West and then have an nuclear accident say from a nuclear power station meltdown in the region ? dunno. Slash and burn so Western forces cannot live there.

Create a demilitarised buffer zone. Oh wait isn't that what he says he's doing.

He did say he wouldn't invade, whether that was to allow a way out for himself incase he decided against it who knows. Problem with the sanctions on sport etc is it's an attack on the Russian people and will only fuel their hate of the west and support of putin. I believe the west hopes this will make the Russian people rise up against putin but it might back fire

Putin will not stop until he is stopped. Finland and the Baltic's are next. Some on here clearly have no will to stop him at all anywhere. Where will you go after your country is occupied? Or will you be a happy slave?
Without the good old US of A we are not ready to stop him. A situation that needs to change ASAP. Unfortunately the UK government aren't up to the job since our PM isn't a comedian he's an unfunny clown. Other countries are facing up to reality whilst the UK is demanding visas of civilian refugee women are children whose male relatives remain at home fighting. Meanwhile Russian oligarchs still enjoy police protection in their gated communities in England. One could easily imagine these are the deranged rantings of an internet looney. Unfortunately not, this is the state of the UK on 1/3/2022.
