The war in Ukraine...

So there was no point in keeping it then was there?

I let this go last night as it was late and we all ought have been in bed. But I will reply. Of course there is every reason to keep it. The potential for NATO to be an offensive entity is entirely within the psyche of the Russians. At no time has any NATO member or the organisation considered and offensive attack on Russia. It is this which I suspect has fuelled Mr Putin. I will leave this now Brian. You maybe right in your view, time will tell. Certainly the wanton destruction being wrought upon Ukraine is truly awful.

Having heard Putin last night issuing his threats of unforeseeable consequences against the US and NATO if they don't stop supplying arms to Ukraine. Isn't it about time they issued some unforeseeable consequences of their own, if he and and his bunch murdering thugs don't get out of Ukraine pdq.
Quite right. I am sure Putin wants the west to “react” in order to give him the credibility he craves. Tricky situation to handle but tine is getting close for the western world to “say something”

Hmm... I think that Mikhail Gorbachev was a fairly decent fellow; it is a great shame that his charisma didn't match his wisdom - although, clearly, he wasn't fully up to speed in re Putin. Had it done so, Russia and the World would probably be pretty different now, and almost certainly both for the better.

It is rather unnerving that for its second half, the government of the Soviet Union, for all its faults, was a more stable and accountable organisation than that currently running Russia. It would have been entirely impossible for any First Secretary alone to have had the power that Putin now wields, post-Stalin the Politburo could - and did - remove anyone unstable / dangerous.

I listened to an interview a few years ago. He was most concerned about the danger of the West not understanding Russia and trying to ifluence it. I think he saw the dangers a leader like Putin presented. I see why now.

The yanks must love the fact they have the Atlantic between them & the potential in Ukraine, at least we have the channel but If Chernobyl taught us anything if the winds in the wrong direction we were told radiation in our sheep lasted 10 years, interesting time for EU countries on the cards now, still if that’s what they crave!

CIA are now tonight warning the Russians may be preparing to use tactical nuclear weapons, the West may end up regretting pushing the Russians too far with the endless build up & supply of weapons to Ukraine, things are starting to get out of hand & some buggers going to pay very dearly for it!
It’ll make your day if nobody else’s

Brian, again you take the biscuit. The EU countries crave for peace and stability. They crave to buy Russian oil and gas and fill the coffers of the Kremlin with Euros. That is what they crave. Just think with all those Euros President Putin could build hospitals, pay pensions to his poorer people, develop a inclusive political system, develop means and ways to avoid climate change. Goodness what a reforming Presidential legacy he could leave. But know he spends it on military equipment. You need to ponder Putin and the Oligarchs and compare with Mestufa Kemal Ataturk post WW1 following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Putin could have been along the same mould - and left an eternal legacy rather different to that which now will inevitably be recorded for all time. Hey ho.

Being as twit Brian brought up Chernobyl ... it’s quite interesting regarding the Russians that in actual fact, in The Czech Republic for example they didn’t even know about the issue for some weeks after. That’s just how open the Russians are.

ill have to remember next time I am spraying... drift goes into the wind, thanks for that important tip BRIAN

Just saw an interview with a retired US General, the usual stuff then... he said that the Russians don't see any difference between the use of normal artillery and tactical nuclear rounds - link at bottom.

I've thought about that, and I disagree; I write that because, if this assertion were true, they would have used them around Kiev and elsewhere already.

I reckon the truth is probably that the Russians certainly do significantly differentiate between conventional and nuclear weapons, but - as with their huge, modern and effective armed forces - they find it convenient to say, and for others to believe otherwise.

The really important thing to remember, is that the drift goes downwind. (y)
