The war in Ukraine...

You mean like the students who killed themselves by setting fire to themselves rather than live under Russia?
That kind of imagination you mean?
If that's the case with no Berlin type wall you would have thought millions of Russians would have been walking Westward before the war started, maybe we missed reports of that.

Like in Crimea?

Lets not forget how this all started.

What happened in Crimea post 2014 was "ethnic cleansing" and not for the first time,
1944
It is estimated that at least 228,392 people were deported from Crimea, of which at least 191,044 were Crimean Tatars in 47,000 families. Since 7,889 people perished in the long transit in sealed-off railcars, the NKVD registered the 183,155 living Crimean Tatars who arrived at their destinations in Central Asia,
2014

In March 2014, Russia annexed and occupied Crimea, an Autonomous Republic of Ukraine. Russian government subjects Crimean Tatars to extreme repression, exiling political leaders and closing media outlets, banning Crimean Tatar Mejlis (elected representative body), and arresting and detaining activists without trial. Illegal searches of private homes and businesses continue, property is confiscated, and individuals run the risk of being kidnapped or even murdered. Thousands of Crimean Tatars have been forced to leave their native land and become Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Ukraine.

Ukraine has always been a deeply divided country, it as a whole elected a leader who turned out to be slightly more pro Russia, the Western side of Ukraine which was more pro Europe revolted & ousted the democratically elected leader, does that make it correct or complicated?

Tens of thousands protest against government in Kiev

Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched on the central square of Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, nearing the end of more than a month of rallies against the government’s decision to shelve a key trade deal with the EU.

Have you been to Ukraine yourself Brian? What gives you the idea Ukraine has always been a deeply divided country? I'm interested in 2 words in particular, always and deeply, I have to admit, it reminds me of the type of language used by Russias state media
