There's nothing quite like an open fire......

Any dinosaurs like me, out there with just an open fire?

Is a grate in the fireplace to put the logs on a good idea - more draw, more heat, less smoke...??

Or is a pile of ash to put the logs on, as good?
If you burn only logs a pile of ash is fine, if you burn coal sometimes you need a grate.
Probably 60% of your heat is going straight up the chimney, maybe more and in order for the fire to burn you are sucking cold outdoor air into your room all the time.
It's like carting grain with a wheelbarrow and paying the running costs of an artic!
Fit a wood burner, you won't believe the difference.

Are wood burners all the rage your side of the pond, or have you all got plenty wood?
They are popular. My cousin and her husband have one. Wood pellet and corn stoves have a following. What really matters when it comes to fireplaces with out a blower is what style.

I have a conventional fireplace. Where as my parents place has two Rumford fireplaces and a beehive stove. Although my house was built in 1928. My parents was built in 1846.

How do you rate the Rumford? More efficient than a 'conventional' fireplace, like yours?

Is a Beehive stove for cooking?
