A few years ago I was thinking of going for them as I’m closing he flock and self replacing. I’m also wanting to reduce workload and lamb outdoors.

I went for highlanders as I was worried about potential prolapse problems in the Romney’s and also didn’t like the fact that a man running 1000 of them told me if have to shear their bellies pre lambing to help lambs find tits.

The highlanders are also slightly smaller and easier kept because of that.

Having said all that I know a guy who bought Romney’s and really likes them.

Hello all, lots of plus points to Romney's, but the best thing if you are serious is to give me a call and come and look around the farm, happy to answer any questions and show you the good, bad and ugly. We run just under 2400 ewes on this farm but between father and brother total family flock is just under 7000 so we do have a bit of experience !

My number is 07747623124 (Rob) look forward to hearing from you

Your Location will help!
Also what kind of land and system do you run?
Run from sea level upto about 1750feet. Half mules lamb end of feb early march and creep fed and other half 3rd week in march and off grass with hill ewes lambing in April. All mules have been lambing inside last few years but mid march mules lambed outside this year because of the good weather.wondered if the romneys would be ok up the hill after weaning?thinking if they need less feeding etc

How have you got on with the highlanders?and what breed did you have before changing?

I run predominantly Romney’s . Nothing like the numbers of @Romney_Rob , but I like the functionality of them. Good feet, great mums, and don’t really pinch other lambs at lambing which helps in an outdoor lambing .
We double clip, it is a bit of a pita, but means no belly wool to remove pre lambing , and the wool is a good quality. We tup enough pure to breed replacements, with the remainder going to tex or Suffolk. Sell anything “ fluffy “ deadweight, as the tight skin butcher racists will clobber them in the live ring !
Bloody grand sheep !(y)

I’ve lamb Romney’s this time. Lambed outside didn’t get involved in a single lambing. That not to say next year I won’t have to. Shearing is a pain. But I’d choose them over most breeds.
