I’ve got a 200a ac/dc R-tech tig, will be about 8 years old now and has been faultless. Used for ali, stainless and mild steal. Excellent company to deal with and not stupid prices would total recommend them.

imo a spool gun is only a half way house but maybe thats just me.
have one here and its ok just, the weld wouldnt be near as nice compared to the tig.

As for a tig unit, mate of mine has been looking at a jasic ac/dc tig, hes very tempted, 5 yr warranty.
I know nothing about them but they read good, prices are very respectable too compared to the likes of the big brands.
you obviously pay for what you get most times but for occasional use its hard to justify 4-5k on a set where the Jasic's are cumming in 1.5-2k for something similar, the duty cycle mightnt be as good just.

I’ll have to agree with you on that, welding Ali with a mig just doesn’t compare to a tig! It’s ok to get you going but any sort of fine work or a short run and it just doesn’t get the same finish.

Got a Fronius Magicwave 3600 here. Bought it just before Christmas as an ex hire machine. It came with all new panels so it looked good as new and had been recalibrated and tested before coming to me. Might be worth going into a local hire bit and seeing if they're selling anything off. I got a really good price on mine because it has good old fashioned analogue knobs on it and they said all the hire customers want the ones with digital up/down arrows now.

I've done a bit of practice on steel of various thicknesses but I really need to try and get some more practice in with it. Had just bought my first box of aluminium rods when the lockdown hit and I was unable to get my hands on any aluminium to practice on! Oddly enough, I did manage to use it to weld two brass components together from the MIG welder to get it up and running again. Cut a little bit off an empty .243 casing to use as filler and it seems to have worked.
